As Jammeh Dismisses Lamin Jobarteh, Sidia Says Ministers "Don't Repeal Laws"

As Jammeh Dismisses Lamin Jobarteh,  Sidia Says Ministers "Don't Repeal Laws"

By Saikou Ceesay

The leader of Gambia's opposition Peoples' Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism, Sidia Jatta, has said that "ministers don't repeal laws."  The former Wuli parliamentarian's remark came on the heels of statements made by the country's Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Lamin Jobarteh, on US based Freedom Radio that if given fund by posing Australian investor he was going to repeal the recently enacted laws that prohibited "begging and caricaturing" in The Gambia. In an exclusive interview with Gambia Affairs at People's Centre office in Churchills town, Mr Jatta said: "A minister don't repeal laws; laws are repealed by the National Assembly. You don't make laws to eradicate poverty. It is by investing in the productive sectors of the country thereby creating employment opportunities for people to work and eradicate poverty. Can you force people to work when there is no job for anybody anywhere in this country?  We make laws to guide people to become sovereign in assuming their responsibilities. Laws are not meant to be oppressive, they are meant to be rehabilitative in intent."

Jammeh Fires Justice Minister Lamin Jobarteh

Justice Minister Lamin Jobarteh has been dismissed with effect from Monday, a statement from the Jammeh State House revealed.  Mr. Jobarteh has been replaced by Ms. Amie Joof, a High Court judge. Ms. Joof is the former wife Lai Conteh, the former KMC Mayor. Jobarteh’s dismissal has to do with an undercover interview he granted to the Freedom Newspaper, in which the Freedom Editor posed as an Austrian investor. Jobarteh said he was going to repeal the recently passed laws banning begging, caricature, and giving false information to a public officer if the posing investor agrees to finance legal aid in the Gambia. The President fired him based on his own admission to sell the Justice Department. Below is our story that led to Jobarteh’s sacking.

Freedom Reader Assesses Gambian Politicians

By Kebbaf

Dear Pa,

I am normally a silent but regular listener but I cannot be silent over this debate.  Ousainou Dabo is an exceptionally committed politician who has made great sacrifices for our nation and his supporters. At 70 the price becomes too great and the burden too heavy. I don't know Hamat Bah or his background, but from his actions and statements he comes across at best as a compromiser and at worst a sellout. Forgive me if I have misjudged you Mr. Bah.

This debate shows all that is wrong with the Gambian political leadership.

Self-interest, and selfishness.

Mutual blame

Inability to focus on the key issues.

Total inability to co-operate in the face of the obvious and overwhelming problem.

A total lack of coherent vision for the future of our people.

Total insensitivity to the suffering of the vast majority of our people

The surgeons argue among themselves, while the patient lies in agony on the operating table.

Gambian Opposition Leader Hamat Bah Tells Raleigh Meeting That Iran Has The Best Democracy In The World

A Gambian opposition leader says Iran has the best democracy in the world. Hamat Bah, the is the leader of the National Reconciliation party (NRP). Mr. Bah was speaking during a weekend conference held in Raleigh North Carolina. Mr. Bah for the first time has recognized the rogue regime in Iran—an Islamic nation categorized by the US State Department as a sworn enemy to the United States. Iran is developing nuclear plants that is threatening global peace. But for politician Hamat Bah, he said the world can learn from Iran when it comes to democratic advancement. He said Iran’s democracy if not the best is a model for other countries to emulate. Mr. Bah’s remarks sparked a heated a debate here in the Triangle, where local Gambian political activists converged to discuss the future of the Gambia. An observer at the meeting said Hamat Bah should read about global politics before opening his mouth talking about issues he has no clue about.  The observer said Hamat Bah’s statement that Iran has the best model of democracy is totally misleading and unfounded.

Lawyer  Darboe And Hamat Bah Disss Each Other At The Raleigh Conference!

The Raleigh unity conference heard on Saturday that Ousainanou Darboe, the leader of the United Democratic Party has once groomed Hamat Bah, the leader of the National Reconciliation party NRP to replace him since he Darboe is getting old.  But Hamat Bah never accepts to join the UDP, Darboe told the conference. Mr. Darboe, who went into brief heated exchanges with Hamat Bah, following Bah’s claims that power struggle and the growing passion for leadership has killed opposition growth in the Gambia, said Hamat Bah’s allegations are false and completely unfounded.  Mr. Darboe said he never wanted to discuss the private conversation he had with Hamat Bah, in his office in the presence of his party Deputy leader Yahya Jallow, but stated that Hamat refused to join the UDP when he groomed him for a possible succession in the foreseeable future. Jammeh Demolishes People’s Properties along the TDA Area

By The Soldier

Pa, This is The Soldier again. Permission to write and I know it is granted. Pa, did The Soldier not say that dictator Jammeh will never change. Dictators don't change. They pretend but they cannot. This past week dictator Jammeh went wild on GRTS that he will demolish people's properties by the beach. Guess what, he gave directives and his officers are demolishing people's properties. Pa, this dictator owns so much land by the beach and he is not going to demolish his but others. Is this fair GAMBIANS, why can't dictator JAMMEH demolish the fences he erected by the beach. Fellow GAMBIANS and he went on TV saying that he will do it and nobody will stop it. Dictator Jammeh is using power but power belongs to the people. Pa, this is just the beginning, believe The Soldier he will take peoples hotels and properties by the beach. Dictator Jammeh is starting at Sanyang but he is eying other hotels and properties by the Senegambia area. Time will tell.

‘BEN ARE YOU CRAZY… WE ARE GOING TO SELL THE DRUGS,’ JAMMEH TELLS BEN JAMMEH DURING A STATE HOUSE MEETING

‘BEN ARE YOU CRAZY… WE ARE GOING TO SELL THE DRUGS,’ JAMMEH TELLS BEN JAMMEH DURING A STATE HOUSE MEETING

When Gambia’s former antinarcotic chief Benedict Jammeh proposed for the destruction of the two billion dollars worth of cocaine to Yahya Jammeh, the President’s immediate response was: Are you crazy Ben?  Jammeh told Ben Jammeh in the presence of the Solicitor General Pa Harry Jammeh at the State House that burning the impounded cocaine was a waste. The President allegedly said the cocaine should be sold, but Ben informed him that any attempt to dispose the cocaine in the market might not augur well on the image of the country. Ben warned against the sale of the cocaine. Jammeh complied. But Ben didn’t know that he has offended the Kanilai drug kingpin. While the high profile cocaine trial involving some South American nationals was in progress in court, Ben was instructed by his boss Yahya Jammeh to surrender the monetary exhibits that was found in possession of the accused persons. Ben then handed the sum of 461,000 Euros drug exhibits to dictator Yahya Jammeh. Jammeh pocketed the money.

New Global Study Pinpoints Main Causes of Childhood Diarrheal Diseases, Suggests Effective Solutions

Findings published in The Lancet can guide prevention, treatment and research on diarrheal diseases, which claim the lives of 800,000 children annually

BASSE, 14 May 2013 – A new international study published today in The Lancet provides the clearest picture yet of the impact and most common causes of diarrheal diseases, the second leading killer of young children globally, after pneumonia. The Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS) is the largest study ever conducted on diarrheal diseases in developing countries, enrolling more than 20,000 children from seven sites across Asia and Africa. GEMS, coordinated by the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Center for Vaccine Development, confirmed rotavirus – for which a vaccine already exists – as the leading cause of diarrheal disease among infants and identified other top causes for which additional research is urgently needed.
