Friday, March 31, 2006 (352 reads)

The International Press Institute (IPI), the global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists, strongly condemns the attack on the private bi-weekly newspaper, The Independent.According to information before IPI, police in Gambia arrested the editor, Musa Saidykhan, and the general manager, Madi Ceesay, of The Independent, and closed the paper's offices, on 28 March. The newspaper's offices were sealed by security forces that morning, and all staff were detained. Most were later released, but Saidykhan and Ceesay were kept in detention. Today, Friday, March 31st, marks five full days after the offices of The Independent newspaper were sealed off and the paper's editor-in-chief Musa Saidykhan and General Manager Madi Ceesay were arrested and whisked off by security forces. Up till this evening, the offices remain sealed and guarded by armed paramilitary officers and Ceesay and Saidykhan remain held. They have not been charged with any crime and we are still not able to establish the reason for this outrage. Even the company's lawyer has not been able to establish the reason for this action. Senior police officers involved in the arrests told our lawyer that they do not know why they are holding Ceesay and Saidykhan.

Re:COUP SUSPECTS ABUSE?/Pa Nderry

                   BY JABOU JOH

Pa Nderry,

I know Tam Jasseh personally and the simplistic narration attributed to him is not the way he talks at all. Not in the least bit. Tam is very coherent and well spoken and infact takes pride in being so..This is why I suspected that some of these people were collaborating with the regime with a cooked up story but as per the statement from his family member, it may very well be that he was not in control of his faculties for one reason or another. I notice that the so-called marabout, Mr Faal's statement is comprised of almost exactly the same words as that of Tam Jasseh with a few changes.

EDITORIAL:COUP SUSPECTS SUBJECTED TO PHYSICAL AND VERBAL ABUSE?
Friday, March 31, 2006 (624 reads)

     EDITORIAL

The alleged coup suspects detainees are being treated unfairly by the administration of President Yahya Jammeh. The detainees are denied access to their lawyers, decent food, regular bath and the right to make voluntary statements. The Freedom Newspaper gathered that coupled with this, the detainees were also subjected to physical and verbal abuse by their captives. The sad thing about all this is that, the detainees have already been presumed guilty by The Gambian authorities, without the courts deciding their fate. The ongoing media trials and forced confessions were geared towards preempting the judicial process, which is yet to kick off.

Thursday, March 30, 2006 (738 reads)

       BY SARJO BAYANG, UK

To find out what the world already knows about Jammeh in his connection with leading international criminals and top crooks, read the Wayne Madsen report. Perhaps the fellow who brands Pa Nderry of peddling unfound information about Jammeh will now find some authentic reading material useful.

HOROMSI:"PRESIDENT JAMMEH SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT HIS LIFE AFTER THE PRESIDENCY"
Thursday, March 30, 2006 (460 reads)

Hormosi: “ Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh, should be worried about his life after the Presidency. Is Jammeh monitoring the developments in Nigeria, Liberia and Sierra Leone? His own personal friend and brother Charles Taylor was arrested yesterday and placed in jail. This should serve as enough lesson for The Gambian dictator. His future is indeed bleak. When we think about the April 10, students massacre, the Novembember 11 mass executions in grand style, the death of Ousman Koro Ceesay, Veteran journalist Deyda Hydara, the Ghanaians dead bodies in Burufut and a host of other atrocities committed by this administration, we doubt if Jilanka will walk as a free man after the Presidency. There is a lot of blood in the hands of this disgraceful Gambian dictator. Watch out Jammeh and prepare for your life after the Presidency.”
