The continuous arrest and detention of people in the Gambia should be a cause for concern to everyone. The sun hardly rise and set in the Gambia without someone being arrested and detained for prolong periods without being charged or told the reasons of their arrest. And the fact that these frequent arrests and detentions are done by the state itself, makes it more worrying. It also raises very serious questions about what directions the Gambia, a so called ‘democratic country’ is heading under the leadership of Yahya Jammeh and his government.

As revelations emerged that Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh is involved in the sale of cocaine, and other dangerous drugs, Freedom Newspaper Publisher Pa Nderry M’Bai Tuesday moderated a one hour program show on Radio Tam Tam—which saw the appearances of prominent Gambian journalists, and human rights activists. Among the panelists include: Pa Samba Jow, a journalist/human rights activist, Yerro Jallow, an Editor with the Gainako Newspaper, Saihou Mballow, a human right activist, Halifa Sallah, former NADD Presidential candidate, and Essa Bokarr Sey, former Gambian Ambassador in Washington DC. After much delay due to unsettled documents intended for the state’s evidence, the treason trial proceeded yesterday amid growing tensions. Defense lawyers in their bid to probe the eleventh state witness faced intervention by the presiding judge, who remarked that the lawyers wereasking unnecessary questions, thus wasting the court’s time. This came after the Director of Public Prosecution successfully tendered the said documents, which included printouts of telephone call history, allegedly by the accused persons and some witnesses.
