The treason trial involving the former Chief of Defense Staff Major General Lang Tombong Tamba, is taking an ugly route, as the former army chief Monday accused the Nigerian born lead prosecutor Richard Chenge of lying to the court by suggesting that he (General Tamba) instructed former army Captain Bunja Darboe, who is serving life imprisonment to write the March 2006 foild coup attempt speech. General Tamba rejected the DPP’s assertions describing it as “lies” and unfounded.

 This week, in Kampala, Uganda, state members of the International Criminal Court begin their first ever review conference of the Court since its establishment in 2002. There is certainly a case for examining the activities of the ICC over the past 8 years. When the Assembly of States parties, those states that have signed up to the ICC statute binding them to its jurisdiction, meet in Kampala there is a lot they should be worried about, not least of which the fact that the ICC has proved to be manifestly unfit for purpose. The ICC’s claims to international jurisdiction and judicial independence are institutionally flawed and the Court’s approach has been marred by blatant double-standards and serious judicial irregularities.

Officials from Senegal and Gambia have decided to re-open the border in Basse—in order for normal trade to resume between the two sister countries, the Government here said. This followed in the heels of the recent visit of the new Senegalese Director General of Customs Muhammed Muktharr Cisse who visited the Gambia to share ideas with his Gambian counterparts.

As the Kanilai International Festival continues to gain momentum in the Gambia, the National Assembly led by Speaker Elizabeth Renner Friday May 28th 2010 donated an amount of D30, 000 to the Kanilai International Festival. Also among the companies who extended financial help to the festival were: First Choice Supermarket D20, 000 while the Banjulunding Women Horticultural Garden Association donated a bull and some garden produce.  GAMTOURS pledges a free transportation worth D100, 000.
