Gambia: DEMOCRATIZATION AND DECENTRALIZED GOVERNANCE Thursday, June 30, 2011 (1662 reads)
DEMOCRATIZATION AND DECENTRALIZED GOVERNANCE
By Burama Jammeh
It appears we’ve settled for periodic elections as a yardstick of democracy in The Gambia. For some, maybe all of us as long as every 5 years ballots go around and results announced is good enough. This is not democracy. In addition the elections in the Gambia cannot pass any objective testing of “free and fair” knowing how IEC is run, knowing Gambia has no register of Gambians (citizens), knowing we've no death register, knowing we can’t be sure it’s Gambians who are registered to vote, knowing they’ve failed to maintain an accurate voter register, knowing taxpayer Gambian TV is monopolized to promote Yahya, knowing Gambians are intimidated on campaign trails, knowing government resources are used for political advantages of Yahya……….so on and on.

Town Crier's Banjul Diary: Day 3 Part B

Last week, I took you on a tour of the coastal from Kairaba Senegambiajunction to Gunjur and Berrending. Now let's pick up from where we left off. After confirming that light poles which were diverted away from the town of Gunjur have indeed been extended to Berrending through the uninhabited forest instead of from Gunjur to Berrending which is booming with new settlements. I was at a loss of words as to the intelligence that decided on such a move. Every tax payer regardless of party affiliation has an inalienable right to benefit from government projects. Gunjur does not deserve such treatment. What is their crime? Tell us Oga.

Is the prisoner from Gambia a persecuted journalist or an impostor?

Jerusalem Journalists Association and International Federation of Journalists wage two-year battle to free Bubacarr Ceesay from prison for being illegal infiltrator; Ceesay claims fled persecution for being journalist in native Gambia.
By Tomer Zarchin
So is Bubacarr Ceesay a courageous investigative journalist who fled his native Gambia because he was threatened by the authorities, whom he had criticized? Or is he an impostor, seeking asylum in Israel on the strength of forged press credentials? For two years, the Jerusalem Journalists Association and the International Federation of Journalists has been waging a legal battle against the Interior Ministry's Refugee Status Department, which believes that Ceesay, who has been held at Saharonim Prison for the past two years, is merely an illegal infiltrator.

Gambia: VOTE APRC OR “NO-DEVELOPMENT” – YAHYA CAMPAIN MANTRA Wednesday, June 29, 2011 (1067 reads)
VOTE APRC OR “NO-DEVELOPMENT” – YAHYA CAMPAIN MANTRA
By Burama Jammeh
Yahya and AP(F)R has abused the rights of Gambians beginning with the overthrow of Jawara’s People’s Progressive Party (PPP). He has since continued to rule the nation under the pretense of democracy with periodic elections that are anything but “free and fair”. These elections registered known non-citizens, incomplete/inaccurate electoral registers, no practical petitioning/verification process since there is no standard documentations that earn a voter card, no separation of government and AP(F)RC and above all intimidations and inducements at actual casting and counting of casted votes. In addition Yahya has absolute control over Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) including who gets hired or fired. Yahya even threatened Gambians at the many campaign rallies that elections will not remove him from power, he sacrificed his life and no way to hand over power to the corrupt even if he looses. He also threatened the largely illiterate voting population that no vote for him means “no-development” for that area/those people. It is obvious the basic divisions of roles and responsibilities in democratic governance do not exist in Gambia and Yahya is A – Z.

Gambia: Breaking News: Gambian Security Agents Question Nigerian Journalist! Tuesday, June 28, 2011 (1744 reads)
Gambian Security Agents Question Nigerian Journalist!
Ahmed Alota, a Nigerian journalist, and also an Academician is having rough time with Gambia’s notorious secret intelligent agents. He was invited for questioning on Monday—few hours after the just concluded Gambia Press Union Congress, which led to the inauguration of a new Executive led by Bai Emil Touray. Mr. Alota’s case is a complex, and funny one for that matter—even though Mr. Alota himself is refusing to discuss, or make his NIA encounter public. He has good reasons to remain mute over the matter. But the Freedom Newspaper can report with authority that the Nigerian writer is a victim of state persecution. He is being grilled over a wide range of issues: Chiefly his affiliation with the former GPU President Ndey Tapha Sosseh, cum Coalition For Change Leader, The GPU Congress, among other issues.

Unite on The Fundamentals of Democracy
By Burama Jammeh

The Gambia gained Independence on February 18, 1965 - this is 46 years of nationhood. The dreams of self-rule - self-esteem, self-reliance, development, dignity and prosperity have since been unrealized. We pay taxes and basic services are anything but desire. The nations development budget is entirely foreign aid funded and another billions of dollars enter the nation through Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Yet, we’re poorer and sicker today than 46 years ago with life expectancy of a male Gambian in the upper forties (some estimates are 47 years). An average chimpanzee in the wild will live longer than an average male Gambian. The illiteracy levels are estimated over 60% of the population with dwindling education standards.

Gambia: Boycott the 2011 elections Monday, June 27, 2011 (2303 reads)
Boycott the 2011 elections
By A. Koroma
The discovery of 4 truck-load of APRC supporters, transported from Mauritania to Banjul and accompanied by the Gambian Ambassador to Mauritania, for the purposes of registering them to vote in the coming General Elections under the most dubious of circumstances is yet more indication of the determination of the corrupt and repressive regime of Yahya Jammeh to steal the 2011 elections, as he's done in successive presidential elections, since the first, in 1996. These latest developments in the vote registrations exercise warrant serious consideration by the opposition to boycott the presidential elections in 2011 as a means of drawing the attention of the international community to the corrupt electoral process - a process that needs to be supervised by external parties to ensure a fair and transparent registration process regime of Yahya Jammeh.
