Basse Attempted Rape Incident: An American From Ohio Was Affected And Not Peace Corps!!
By Mama Sowe
Following an intensive investigations into the Basse attempted rape case, the Freedom Newspaper later discovered that the victim involved in the said incident was from Ohio State and not a peace corps volunteer as earlier reported. Our source mistaken the said US National to be a peace corps volunteer, when in actual fact she was not a volunteer. We deeply regret for any incontinence the said piece might have caused to Peace Corps Gambia. Our correspondent was informed that the US Citizen named withheld is currently hospitalized at the Medical Research Council MRC. She sustained injury on her mouth during the said incident, which left a Basse student arrested.

Greetings From Dakar- Binta Sarr Jammeh salutes Freedom Newspaper
By Binta Sarr Jammeh
I would like to take this opportunity to first of all thank you, your staff and those in the Diaspora, who dare to question authorities in Kanilai [not Banjul] and expose the myths and fairy tale economics, perpetrated on Gambians for the last 40 years. I wish, newspapers back home will feature the series forwarded, to give UN-enlightened Gambians another perspective.
My only beef with the series, is the unwarranted used of language not meant for such an important expose. Always remember, the struggle to salvage Africa from these Kleptocrats, has to be civil. Readers of other nationalities and interested NGO and Governmental organs are keenly following the debate.
Wishing all my Gambian brothers and sisters, a Happy New Year.

Editorial: Monday Black Day For Gambia: The Beginning Of A Monarchial Rule!!
Disturbing Security And Tribal Issues Exposed!!
…..General Tamba And DIG Modou Gaye Under Fire
Monday December 31St is a dark day in Gambia’s body politics. This is the day in which Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh openly exhibited his long plan to groom his newly born son as his successor. He declared a National Holiday just to name his son Muhammed Yahya Jammeh. By all indications, this country is heading to monarchial rule. The mere fact that Jammeh has declared Monday as a national holiday tells a lot about his hidden plans. Absolutely, there is no justification for such national holiday. He is signaling to Gambians that he owns The Gambia and can do whatever he wants. Jammeh also wants to demonstrate to Gambians that baby Muhammed’s coming was a blessing in disguised for his unfinished power greed. Jammeh has laid down his own plans and God will decide.

Basse Rape Case: Peace Corps Director Clarifies!!
Freedom Editors Gave Their Side Of The Story
Dr. Rodney Stubina

Managing Director
Freedom Newspaper

Re: 14 Year Old Basse Boy Rapes a PEACE CORPS Volunteer.
Dear Mr M’Bai:
On the 26th of December your newspaper published an incorrect incident reported by Mama Sowe, from Basse, stating that a 63 year old female US Peace Corps volunteer was involved in a rape in Basse. I’d like a retraction and correction made as soon as possible this week.
Peace Corps has many volunteers in the Gambia serving Gambian communities admirably nationally. However, Peace Corps currently does not have a 63 year old female volunteer in Basse, or anywhere in the Gambia. No Peace Corps Volunteer was involved in this incident, in Basse, as reported in the Freedom Newspaper December 26th 2007, by Mama Sowe.
A copy of your original press release is attached for your information.
To help us recruit volunteers for the Gambia a retraction is needed immediately. Please print a correction in the first weekday issue possible and again next Sunday and please include the retraction in the online edition archive.
Due to the nature and gravity of this event, locally and internationally, it is important that a retraction be made immediately, with a follow up. Many people rely on word-of-mouth to hear about such events, so the sooner you can print a correction, the more your Gambian communities stand to benefit.
Here is the correct information:
No United States Peace Corps Volunteer was raped, or experienced an attempted rape in Basse as reported in the Freedom Newspaper on December 26th 2007. While this is a terribly unfortunate event for all involved, we support the apprehension and prosecution of any perpetrator of such events.
Please call me if you need further information to comply with my request. You can reach me day or night.
Thank you for making this correction as quickly as possible.
Sincerely,
Dr. Rodney Stubina
Associate Peace Corps Director
Enclosure: Original press release
Editors Note: Thanks Dr. Rodney Stubina for setting the records straight. The said piece was reported in good faith without malice. The story was based on information we received from relevant school authorities in Basse. Whether it was a mistaken identity or misrepresentation of facts, is a subject of further investigations.
For all we know is that a student at ST. Georges was arrested in connection with the said incident. Our reporter visited the school, where he spoke to one of the teachers who confirmed the story to him. We have the teacher’s voice on tape.
We regret for any adverse effect the said story might have caused to your organization. We recognize Peace Corps’s valuable contributions towards nation building. Over the years, the United States Peace Corps had contributed immensely in the nation’s socio-economic development. This includes in the area of health, science, agriculture, livestock, Forestry and other developmental sectors.
The Freedom Newspaper had earlier attempted to solicit reaction from your office but no one was available to shed light on the story. We have done our part by ensuring that parties mentioned in the said piece were contacted for their side of the story.
Prior to talking to you on the phone on Thursday afternoon, we contacted our Correspondent and he said his story was based on what his source at ST. Georges told him.
While we commend you for setting the records straight, we want to assure Peace Corps Gambia and its parent body that the said story was reported inline with the spirit of responsible journalism. It was also covered in the best interest of the public.
We also want to thank the Peace Corps Director for the encouraging remarks he made about the Freedom Newspaper when we spoke on the phone. We appreciate the complements and be rest assured that Freedom is here to deliver the goods. Thanks for your attention.

Finance Minister Under Fire! The Banjul Figures and The Realities of The Gambia-Part Five Sunday, December 30, 2007 (1202 reads)
The Banjul Figures and The Realities of The Gambia
Part IV - Covering Information, Communication & Technology Development, Population, women in Development, Trade Policies, Economic Agreements and Tourism
By Burama Jammeh
The Secretary covers his government’s efforts in Information, Communication and Technology in Section 57 - 60. What this meant is what and how they intend to support the government with information technology. This has nothing to do with Gamtel except the fact that the services of Gamtel will be the supporting base for some of those installments. Needless to spend our time, every country, organization and individuals need to improve their ability to communicate and conduct of business with telecommunication in order to stay competitive. This is a support service needed to better facilitate the conduct of business at government. Notwithstanding, government has the primary role to regulate the proliferation of telecommunication products and services, the use of such services and products, the investment of such services and products.

Mr. Gaye reported to Deputies his government’s recognition of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to economic development and poverty reduction hence the need for a policy framework to encourage development of ICT and application into the economic sector. Mr. Gaye should not make this statement to our deputies or they should throw it back on his face. He is increasing the length of the already long noisy document. The point is, The Gambia already has an ICT policy framework on which Gamtel and other ICTs businesses, applications and uses are based on. It cannot be a justifiable matter for 2008 budget to report on ICT policy as progress of the previous budget. Additions and subtractions to such policy based on the needs of the ever changing technology and economic environment during the period under review can be reported. There impact on the overall state of that sector can as well be reported. Those are what matters and relevant to the nation during this reporting period.

Journey to Banjul!! Saturday, December 29, 2007 (1335 reads)
Journey to Banjul.
From Michael and H.R.H. Princess Monique United Kingdom.
Dear Mr.Editor,
There have been many books written about the future course of the inhabitants of planet Earth. Some are fiction, some are non fiction and others could be termed as visionary. Certainly books written by Jules Verne or H,G..Wells spoke of mans future capability to engage science and evolving technologies to ascend and transcend the Universe. Such books written at a time when man had barely evolved from the advantage of wheeled travel, surely are most remarkable and remain inspired and visionary beyond normal imagination. Much of there visionary content from there respective imagination, have now become reality. Other books, written engage the theory of commercial exchange and governance of the population, aspiring to construct civilisations towards progress through reform. The modern day examples of such inspired thought are represented by considered opinion such as Karl Marks, or indeed Adam Smith. A less inspiring thought process of mans capability to inflict order and authority on society, is contained within George Orwells vision through his novel 1984.
