Rebels spotted in Gambia Posing As Fleeing Refugees-IGP Sonko And
Immigration Chief Musa Mboob Accused Of Admitting MFDC Rebel
Combatants As So Called Refugees!!!
Border Guards Say Some Of The Refugees Admitted Were MFDC Rebels...
Residents Of Sibanor Hinted About Gunshot Noise In The Area!
Police Spokesman Was Indisposed For Comments...
Well
placed sources close to the Sibanor Police Station have confirmed the
presence of armed Casamance rebels in the Fonis. The rebels are said
to be preparing for a counter attack against the Senegalese government
forces in days to come. While it is not clear if the Gambian
authorities provided them with safe heaven, what is clear though is
that efforts to repel the said rebels from a Gambian border village was
greeted with strong opposition from the police head quarters in Banjul.
Reports have it that IGP Ousman Sonko issued orders that all the
fleeing MFDC combatants and refugees should be accorded with sanctuary.
Some of these combatants who were registered as refugees were said to
have converged at a border village, where they stratedgised for their
next line of action. Sources hinted that a good number of MFDC
fighters found their way in the Gambia following the latest attack,
which led to the death of a humanitarian volunteer. Local immigration
officials and police officers at the Gambia/Senegalese border say some
MFDC rebels clandestinely entered the country posing as genuine
refugees when they were not. Our sources say officers assigned to
coordinate the admission of the refugees dares not to turn down the
fleeing rebels. Over six thousand refugees were admitted in the Gambia
following the worsening security situation in the Southern Provence of
Casamance.
President Wade Jammeh Gibba of the MFDC
Residents of Foni Sebanor told this paper that they
heard sounds of gunshot in the area at night. It is not clear what
kind of security activities were taking place along the border, but
local villagers say the rebellion is now taking its toll on the local
populace as they received strange faces on a daily basis. The Gambian
government has repeatedly denied harboring MFDC rebels. But what is
disturbing at this hour is that the country's security forces are the
ones alleging about the presence of MFDC rebels in our soils. The
concerned officers never hide their opposition against the latest attempts
made by the MFDC to clandestinely disguised as refugees.
According
to sources, the Red Cross Society which provides humanitarian
assistance to the refugees were not in the position to determine if
these fleeing refugees were genuine refugees or not. Our sources hinted
that the refugees were screened by the police and the immigration who
okayed whoever appeared before them for protection. Some of the said
refugees hardly stayed in their camps, as they were often seen in Buwiam,
Sibanor, Kanilai and other surrounding villages. It is also gathered
that some usually worked at the President's farm, where they raised the
budget for their subversive activities. A close protection officer
attached to the President confirms seeing the said rebels working on
President Jammeh's farm. According to the officer, most of those who
worked at the President's farm were from Casamance.
The
alleged presence of the latest batch of MFDC rebels in the Gambia is
sending mixed signals across the country,as the country's Presidential
elections gets closer. While police spokesman Aziz Bojang was not
available to confirm or deny the alleged presence of MFDC rebels in the
Gambia at this hour, reports have it that IGP Sonko recently
spearheaded some security changes along the border. The Sibanor police
was said to have been restructured. SO Abdoulie Colley who was linked to
helping Marabout Hydara to escape was also said to have angered the
Gambian authorities following his move to block fleeing refugees.
Colley, who was born in Casamance has been fired from his job alongside
with other police officers. Insiders at the Sibanor police lamented about the IGP'S heavyhandedness. They accused him of trying to please President Jammeh to the deteriment of the men and women of the force. They say Sonko was the most incompetent IGP, they ever had in the force and prayed for his removal.
The Freedom Newspaper also
gathered that most of the so called refugees who crossed to the Gambia
were issued with voters cards in the recent past and were likely to
vote come election day. An immigration officer assigned to one of the
refugee camps says he recognizes some of the refugees, some whom he
said were in the country at some point. While some of the refugees have
abandoned the camps, few of them are currently engaged in small scale
farming. Our reporter who visited one of the camps said some of the
refugees complained about lack of food and better accommodation. Some
of the kids were diagnosed with malaria and other related diseases. The
Red Cross has been doing its best to help the displaced refugees, but
food and decent place of living has been a major concern raised by the
refugees.
The Guinean army recently intercepted a boat with arms destined for
the troubled region of Casamance.Deadly weapons were found in the said boat
along side with some MFDC rebels. It is not yet clear where the MFDC
rebels secured the said arms.
