President
Yahya Jammeh is planning to declare a state of emergency in the event the
opposition refuses to concede defeat in the country's September 22ND
Presidential Elections, a well placed state house source hinted today.
The state house insider says "the President is increasingly worried
about the comportment of the opposition after the declaration of the
elections results" and as such had initiated contingency plans to
avert any unrest in the West African country. It is gathered that the
President had assigned certain state guard soldiers in private to run
some errands for him before polling day. The state house insider hinted
that some of these state guards led by Musa Jammeh off late had been
training in the bush in a bid to execute Jammeh's assignment. Our
source who met the President on a daily basis told the Freedom
Newspaper that the Head of State was also troubled by the loyalty of
the some of the men of the Gambia National Army as certain soldiers
were placed under surveillance by the NIA. The source said the
President still entertains the belief that some of the soldiers were
Ndure Cham's loyalists and is planning to get rid of them. Our state
house source hinted that some of the said soldiers placed under
surveillance were being closely watched at work and home.
Jammeh Plans To Impose State Of Emergency soon!
The
Freedom Newspaper was informed by our well trusted source that certain
army officers were tasked with the responsibility of enforcing the said
state of emergency in the offing. Chief of Staff Lang Tombong
Tamba,Interior Minister Baboucarr Jatta, Inspector General of police
Ousman Sonko, Harry Sambou of the NIA, and David Colley of the NIA were
all briefed by the President who happens to be the commander-in-chief
to enforce the said state of emergency once orders emanates from his
end. Our source hinted that the President has also given orders to the
country's security chief to greet elections violence with zero
tolerance while his hit men are currently having training in the bush.
Opposition Leaders Being Watched by the State
Reliable
and authoritative sources at the state house told the Freedom Newspaper
that some NIA officers and armed state guards were busy monitoring
opposition rallies across the country. Our sources say such a move was
calculated to monitor the speeches of the opposition leaders and their
supporters comportment. Investigations reveal that some of the armed
security forces clandestinely posed as opposition supporters while they
stood very close to the opposition podium platforms. The said armed
guards are also equipped with mini reporters tape recorder to monitor
the opposition meetings. Tapes of the said meetings are usually handed
over to the President on a daily basis. In some instances, it is played
over the phone for him to listen by the security operatives on the
ground, said my source. Our state house source hinted that the said
armed guards were likely to create a pandomonium in opposition rallies
and blamed opposition supporters of being responsible for such
disturbances. The source said the state operatives can hardly be
differentiated with opposition supporter as they dressed in UDP and
NADD shirts. Our source hinted that the opposition leaders were not
well prepared in the event of a major attack perpetrated by these faked
armed opposition supporters. The President ,said the source was not
taking the issue of national security lightly, as he vows to deal with
security chiefs found wanting in their duties just like he did in the
case of Daba Marena and others. Our source says since the killing of
Daba Marena, Lowe and other service chiefs have now opened their eyes
to avoid being victims of Jammeh's avenge killings. It is gathered that
Jammeh's own close protection officers were being frequently changed as
he trusts no one these days to get closer to him for a long time. The
state house source hinted that Ousainou Darboe of the NRP/UDP alliance,
Halifa Sallah of NADD and Lamin Waa Juwara were being closely watched
by state agents. It is not yet clear what Jammeh intends to do with the
three, but the source said an operation has been designed by the
President to take care of election matters.
Security Beefed UP AT GRTS
As
the Presidential Elections gets closer security has been beefed up at
the GRTS premises. State House sources hinted that the President is not
willing to reveal what he gathered but was all the time insisting that
public installations such as GRTS and Gamtel should be well guarded now
and before the elections. GRTS staffers told the Freedom Newspaper that
they were being repeatedly subjected to untold screening by armed guards
even though they worked at the premises. A certain GRTS announcer named
withheld told me that some staffers were intimidated by the strong
presence of security in the area. It is also gathered that some NIA
officers were assigned to the Television to vet TV speeches featuring
political leaders before being aired. The said NIA operatives are
constantly seen in the GRTS news room during production time. A local
announcer told the Freedom Newspaper that most of the tapes critical of
the President and his administration were censored. The announcer says
the idea of giving air time to the opposition was merely intended to
deceive election monitors, but in reality there was no equal access to
the public media. According to the announcer, the President's speeches
were being edited by their Director General Momodou Sanyang who never
censored his materials. The announcer charges that Sanyang was also
directing them alongside with some NIA agents to censor opposition
views critical of the administration.
Daily Observer Also Warns to Desist from giving space to the opposition
The
Daily Observer newspaper has also been warned to desist from publishing
critical opposition views, said an insider of the paper. The
Presidential decree on election media censorship also affected the
Daily Observer. The paper's reporters and editors were warned by Saja
Taal to refrain from publishing materials that will upset the
President. Taal was quoted as saying that the paper's efforts should be
directed as to how to help re-elect the President and not to publish
news materials that will deligitimize the government of the day. An
observer insider says Dr.Taal stays late in the office to witness the
news evening editing and in some instances writes editorial for the
paper. Dr.Taal and Mam Sait Ceesay were linked to censoring opposition
stories authored by the paper's reporters. Both Taal and Ceesay dressed
in party asobis to show their support and allegiance for the President. | Posted on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 (Archive on Sunday, October 29, 2006) Posted by PNMBAI Contributed by PNMBAI
