Party Officials Protest To The Commonwealth Observers!

Detainees Claim Torture And Death Threats-As Paras Denied Them Food And Visitors!!

              By Our Roving Reporter

About dozen of UDP/NRP/GPDP supporters were last evening arrested by the paramilitary and detained at their headquarters in Kanifing, the Freedom Newspaper can authoritatively reveal. Among the arrestees include a 17 year old boy, who was seen video taping the UDP convoy numbering into over 40,000. The paramilitary officers some of whom were said to be dead drunken could not withstand Darboe's cheering crowd who chanted slogans for regime change in the West African country. The arrest of these opposition supporters followed the successful hosting of the UDP meeting held at the Sedaclub in Latri-Kunda German yesterday.

The Freedom Newspaper reporter visited the Kanifing paramilitary base, where some of the detainees complained about torture and death threats issued against them by the paras. The detainees also complaints about being denied food and access to their families. An official of the police intervention unit  accused the detainees of trying to incite violence, a charge the opposition flatly denied. The official told our reporter that the orders for the arrest of the said opposition supporters came from the top while insisting that they were not taking chances during the electioneering period. The officer says they have enough men to counter any possible violence now and after the elections.

Meanwhile, the UDP led alliance has protested against what they called the illegal arrest of their men by the police. They described the action as an action of provocation. An official of the UDP led alliance told the Freedom Newspaper that their supporters had always been law abiding and therefore describes the police's  action as uncalled for. According to the official, their party had lodged a complaint with the head of the Commonwealth observer team Dr.Salim and had demanded for the unconditional release of the detainees. The official also says they also contacted the Interior Secretary of State Baboucarr Jatta to facilitate the release of the detainees. With barely few hours to the Friday polls, the opposition supporters are still languishing in jail.  The Interior Secretary had not yet issued orders for the release of the detainees. If not release today, the chances of the detainees exercising their franchise would be hindered by their detention.
