Is The State Accusing Halifa Sallah Of Voter Fraud? Is Sallah's Nomination Valid At This Hour?? Is The State Accusing Halifa Sallah Of Voter Fraud?
Buba Sanyang Claims Against Halifa Sallah Are Very, Very Damaging At This Hour...
The State Is Saying That Halifa's Nomination Was Invalid!
EDITORIAL
With barely few hours to the Friday's polls, it appears that the
nomination of NADD'S flag bearer Halifa Sallah is being doubted with
the recent revelations that one of his party supporters Buba Sanyang
was caught with signed nomination documents, while he Sanyang posed as
an official of the IEC. The IEC is mute over the issue, but this latest
developments will no doubt have an adverse effect on Halifa's bid for
the Presidency. The state is trying to claim that Halifa's nomination
was done under false pretense with Sanyang parading as an IEC official
while soliciting people to sign Halifa's nomination papers. While the
State is using the might of the public media to delegitimize Halifa's
nomination, it is imperative to note that the timing of Buba's so
called confession speaks volumes at this hour. The minds of Halifa's fans
had been polluted with the state propaganda that Halifa sends Buba to
scout for people to facilitate his nomination. Such revelations would
likely influence the electoral support base for Halifa as many voters are
currently questioning the legitimacy of his nomination. In short, the
state is implying that Sallah's nomination was fraudulent. Even though
Halifa had denied being a party to Sanyang's alleged vote hooding
malpractices, what is clear is that the state is hell bent on
undermining his credibility with these damaging stories of voter fraud.

We
still cannot fathom why Halifa Sallah should be targeted by the state
at this hour. When it comes to number and support base Sallah is far
behind Darbo. The state's allegations against Sallah is mind bugling at
this hour. We tried to connect the dots on numerous times but could not
figure out any sense on the current state of affairs. It is our contention
that the state is merely engaged in character assassination and bully
tactics. Halifa is not a threat to Jammeh considering his support base.
The type of picture Jammeh and his followers are trying depict at this
hour against Sallah is very disturbing to say the least. They want to make us believe
that NADD is not a credible party and were engaged in voter fraud ahead
of the polls. That the APRC wants to tell Gambians that NADD cannot
raise the required number of voters that would facilitate Halifa's
candidature. This is a mockery to democracy. If the PDOIS can sponsor
the nomination of Sedia Jatta in the last elections why not Halifa.
Remember, there are two other parties who are part of NADD. That's the
PPP and NDAM. Jammeh and his people should do their home work right and stop
the politics of character assassination.
Hear Halifa Sallah in this statement"What
is of concern to me is the GRTS Radio is reporting as news that I have
asked Buba Sanyang to obtain the signatories by impersonating I.E.C
personnel. I have been duly nominated with over 6000 people subscribing
to my nomination. The GRTS report is giving the impression that my
nomination is invalid. Many of my supporters are calling to find out
whether my nomination is still valid. This conforms that the TV and
Radio broadcast is calculated to sow the seed of uncertainly among the
voters. This is buttressed by the fact that the GRTS failed to send
reporters to cover a press conference I held to clarify matters on 20th
August 2006 after their broadcast. They repeated their 20th August
broadcast on Buba Sanyang on 21st August 2006 but suppressed the
broadcasting of my 20th August 2006 broadcast in which I tried to
clarify the issue. The matter was reported to Mr. Joe Colley but
nothing was done until the end of the campaign period. What is
repugnant is that the Radio broadcast on the Buba Sanyang still on and
is likely to feature in the 1pm news, a day before the election."
Sallah's
request that the IEC to clarify the situation by announcing that his
candidature was not invalid has fallen into deaf ears, as the electoral
body is not keen at this hour to dispute the state's claims of
nomination fraud against Sallah. Assuming that Halifa Sallah was
declared the winner of Friday's elections, his victory could be disputed
legally in view of the nomination fraud advanced by the state. But the chances
of Sallah becoming the next President are very slim in view of the
opposition disintegration.
There is so much damage caused on
NADD and Halifa Sallah as a person. It would take time before the
voters can distinguish the chaff and the wind. This was why some of us
insisted that the opposition were committing political suicide by
trying to divide. Unity means strength. If Sallah and Darboe were
together, a situation like this could have been avoided. But due to
greed and lack of principles, the opposition is today paying the price of being greedy. They are caught
between the sea and the devil. We feel sorry for Sallah at this hour.
That the legitimacy of his nomination as a flag bearer is being
doubted by the state is a cause for concern. The IEC need to clear the
air before polling day, which is barely few hours from now. Halifa in a
voter scam? This is unbelievable. It beat our imagination. | Posted on Thursday, September 21, 2006 (Archive on Sunday, October 22, 2006) Posted by PNMBAI Contributed by PNMBAI
