Tried To Undermine His Project With Kickback Demands!
Bakary
Njie Demands $50,000 Dollars To Okay GSM Project-While James Kujabi was
Accused of Demanding $400,000 Bribe For Jammeh's Re-Election.... By Our Washington DC Legal Affairs Correspondent
Gambia's
Central Bank Governor Famara Jatta yesterday told a Washington Federal
court that the fired President of the EAW GROUP INC, firm lobbyist John
Aycoth never carried out any significant work that might impress the
seat of power in Banjul. Jatta who flew from Banjul to DC to testify
on the half a million US dollars case slambed against the Jammeh
administration says the lobbyist never improved the country's image
when hired, a charge John Aycoth and his team flatly rejected. Jatta
who spent some hours on the dock testifying says the decision to fire John
Aycoth was reached at cabinet level, as the administration was not
pleased with the lobbyist's work. Also among their target area was
wooing investors, which the Minister testified was lacking on their
side of the lobby firm. Jatta says the government did not accept the
intercel and Gamfuels projects. These were millions of dollars project
which the EAW Group firm says in their court deposition that it was
designed to bring jobs for the country's unemployed population.
 Governor Jatta Faces US Court
Earlier
on, the Chairman of Intercel Group Africa Joe Gaptt narrated how his 50
million dollars GSM project was frustrated by corrupt Gambian public
officials. Mr.Gaptt testimony was very revealing, as he named names of
officials bent on undermining the said project. Bakary Njie, former
Managing Director of Gamtel was alleged to have demanded $50,000
dollars kickback from Gaptt before he (Bakary Njie) will okay the
cellular phone contract meant for the impoverished West African
country. Another person whose name featured prominently on the trial
was James Kujabi, former Deputy Protocol officer at the State House.
James was alleged to have asked the intercel CEO to make contribution
to President Jammeh's re-election in 2001. James the court heard,
demanded the sum of 400,000 dollars from Gaptt to enable the expedition
of his project's approval. In the end, the project died down as the
regime was said to have demanded too much money from the investor well
before the project proper kicksoff the ground.
Also testifying
in court was Bruce Jewels who flew from South Africa to testify on
behalf of the EAW Group. Jewels is an African Banker and consultant. In
his testimony he says, he led the South African delegation to Banjul
for the launching of the GAMFUELS project. The said project which
amounts to 23 million dollars was aimed at replacing the old Banjul
Shell depot station. The project we heard, was supposed to be financed
by the South African government. Like the intercel GSM project, Jewels
also testified that the GAMFUELS project was hindered by unnecessary
delays on the side of the Gambian government to facilitate the smooth
running of the project. The Chairman of the country's petroleum project
at the Department of Trade was alleged to have repeatedly asked
Mr.Jewels to help fund his kids school fees well before the project
kicks-off. The petroleum chief was said to have bothered Jewels with
domestic problem complaints which he appealed for Jewels help.
Finance
Ministry officials were also said to have demanded $50,000 dollars
bribe from Jewels to turn over the technical information reached on the
said project. Businessman Amadou Sambou was alleged to have tried to
steal the said project from its pioneers with his past efforts to
hijack the GAMFUELS project. Samba's name also featured prominenlty on
the said case against the Gambian government. The trial resumes this
morning.
