20 Prisoners Died Of Hunger And Other Related Diseases From January To Date-Prison Official Reveals

Horomsi: Jammeh Jilanka is not happy these days. He hardly stays at the state house. He is between Banjul and Kanilai. Something is bothering our President. He should share his worries and fears with us. What is going on Jilanka? There was this night when Jilanka hurriedly left the state house for Kanilai. Soldiers at the state house say the man might be suffering from mental illness which he is not keen at sharing with our people at this hour. He walked around state house yard while threatening to crush anyone trying to bring him down. In some instances, Jilanka would go on road running around the sandy beaches early morning before reporting to work. He hardly sleeps and kept on changing his body guards and close protection officers. Inside the state house people openly talked about Jilanka's strange behaviors. He called soldiers interviewing  them on a daily basis. He wants to know who is loyal and who is not. The most interesting thing is that his former loyalists are gone. These were the very people who used to say that they were ready to die for Jilanka. But guess what, he turned around and accused them of capital offence. There is a new  list in the hands of Jilanka as I piece this write up together. The current state guard commander is on Jilanka's list. Jilanka is now doubling as an intelligence chief. He processed intelligence given to him by some boys who report directly to him. Boy Harry Sambou need not to worry too much. Jilanka is also running his own intelligence branch. Perhaps you can exchange notes at the end of the day. Jilanka wants to further extend his broom to the army.

He plans to start his new  five year mandate with routine arrest. Leaks from his office say he plans to arrest all potential threats. The next state guard commander would be Tumbul Tamba. Tamba has been telling some of his close loyalists in the army that HE has promised to appoint him as commander. Once Tamba assumes that responsibility Jilanka's ball game starts. Interior Minister Baboucarr Jatta is likely to be removed soon. An axe will fall in Jammeh's cabinet. Surprise appointments will soon be made. He has approached some people to help him steer the affairs of the country. Some old guards are likely to show up. Dr.Manneh's appointment has been confirmed. Manneh has been unofficially groomed as Local Government Minister. His vote canvassing games impresses Jilanka. Jilanka changes his mind to fire Yanks Touray in his cabinet resufffle which is in the offings. Yanks will go at a latter date after the resuffle. Omar Fye has been lined up to head the Ministry of Interior according to the new list.

Many soldiers say they don't feel secured about their jobs. They say Jilanka is favouring his own people. That he only promotes people who carry out dirty job for him. Jilanka's five year rule is going to be interesting. Let watch and see. He created many enemies. Jammeh is today surrounded by people who hate him in all aspect. These are people who pretends as his supporters but in actual fact they don't like him. The man is a fool. He thinks that  anything that glitters is real. Fantasy and dreams will take him by surprise. If Jammeh wants a peaceful ending he should organize a national reconciliation and ask for forgiveness to those he wronged either directly or indirectly. This will help to minimize future legal cost. Gambians are known to be God fearing and nice people. Jilanka should be honest and humble enough to seek for forgiveness. Change is bound to come one day. Jilanka is making the biggest mistake by thinking that he is invincible. There are people closer to God than Jilanka. Think twice and don't allow to be over carried by power.

The other day, a  friend of mine met Lie Conteh and according to him the man looked very hopeless. Lie of all Lie is today finding it difficult to fuel his car. Don't tell me that his wife is not working. His wife Amie Joof is a trained lawyer, but not withstanding Lie still needs help. Lie is totally confused.  Lie still reports to the Kairaba station. The state is yet to clear him up with the coup story allegation. His recent appeal for forgiveness  to the President through the Vice President felt into deaf ears. Jammeh is sitting at the state house enjoying Lie's nightmares. The boys at Kairaba kept him posted about Lie's conditions and other suspects.

Jammeh should try and renovate the mile two prisons for God sake. Jammeh will hate to be in one of those nasty cells if taken there one day. The environmental sanitation in that prison is appalling. The place stinks. Visitors to the prison are first greeted by the bad smell coming from the cells. Inmates are over crowded at the remand wing and private cells are hardly cleaned. This  is why more and more inmates are being admitted these days. An inmate told me that they  were served with poorly cooked food with no  balance diet. Many inmates are malnourished because of the poor food. One must be lucky to have one meal a day and in  most cases food is scare. If the current situation continues, there is bound to be riot in the prisons. Inmates fight  at wee hours and causes pandemonium in the jail. The lack of sleep is attributable to hunger. These prisoners spent hours in the sun working only to be denied food. Some worked in rice fields, farms, construction and sometimes cutting fire woods. From January to now over 20 inmates have died at the Mile Two, a prison warden told me. The prison warden said food stuffs meant for the prisoners were being divided  by some officers at the prisons. That these officers would take the best part of the food stored for the inmates and share it with their loved ones. The officers also connived with some inmates to traffic marijuana and cell phones into the prisons. A certain inmate name withheld was calling his family while in jail. They changed their numbers anytime they wanted. They sent text messages. These prisoners are given VIP treatment. The jail is not reforming our youngsters. These corrupt officers headed by David Colley are not teaching them good values. Instead, they are making the prison a drug zone. All kinds of activities took place at the Mile Two.

Prison wardens are ready to do  anything for you as long as you are ready to line their pockets with "DEPAS." Gifts and other groceries meant for the inmates are usually hijacked by some corrupt officers. They sat on such gifts and groceries. Some will took it upon themselves to approach inmate families while posing as if they were sent to collect money or food items. Women inmates are in some instances abused. Due to fear, they hardly share their stories with their loved ones.  The Red Cross and other human rights organizations should visit the Mile Two  Prisons and see for themselves. Mile Two is in total mess.  I have been away and  I'm back to base. Horomsi is sadden by Jilanka's ending. Jilanka's case is a sad story. Time will tell soon.
