Breaking News:MP Duta Kamaso Freed At Last! High Court Deplores Rights Abuses in The Gambia.. The Release MP Was Accused By The State As An Informant To The Freedom Newspaper!
High
Court Deplores The Right Abuses In The Gambia, While Urging The Gov't
To Respect The Rights And Liberties Of The Detainees...
A Sizable Crowd Of Well Wishers And Sympathizers Converged At Duta Kamaso's Tabokoto Home!
By Staff Writer Karafa Badjie
News
just came in that the detained former Wuli MP Duta Kamaso has regained
her freedom after been granted bail by the high court in Banjul. The
expelled MP spent six months behind bars without been charged with any
offence. She was linked to having ties with the Raleigh based Freedom
Newspaper, an allegation she flatly denied. Prior to her release, her
son Ousman Saidykhan launched a personate appeal to President Jammeh
few weeks ago calling on the Gambian leader to set her mum free in the
spirit of Ramadan. Madam Kamaso was granted bail by the court which
deplored her continued detention without trial. Attempts made by the
state to block the bail application failed as the court held that the
detainee deserves the right to bail. People who saw the former MP say
Duta appeared very weak and pale. She suffered mental torture while in
custody and was denied access to her family.
The Rule Of Law At Last Observed... Justice Delayed
is Justice Denied!
A sizable crowd
of well wishers converged at Duta Kamaso Tabokoto home where they
sympathized with the former MP. The MP who appeared focused has been a
strong promoter of women rights and education in the impoverished West
African country. Duta Kamaso's troubles with the ruling APRC started
shortly after the hacking of the Freedom Newspaper. She was accused by
the state of passing classified information to the editors of this leading
paper which she denied. According to sources, the first lady Zeinab
Suma Jammeh was a personal friend of Madam Kamaso. Sources hinted that
the state were concerned about revelations made by this paper
regarding Jammeh's past matrimonial problems. The MP according to our
findings was accused by investigators of meddling into Jammeh's
matrimonial life, a charge she flatly denied. While the NIA could not
lay their hands on any credible or indicting evidence that could link
the MP with the Freedom Newspaper sources say the MP was being harassed
while in custody by her captives. She was made to sign numerous
statements by the agency, without her consent.
In
a ruling yesterday, the presiding judge dismissed the state's
deposition to oppose the bail application. It ruled that the detainee
should be charged or release. While the state wants the court to believe
that the MP was being still investigated, the court on the other hand
held that the liberties of the detainee should be observed by the
government. After series of arguments, the court concluded that the
detainee be granted bail until the state deem it fit to take her to
court, while observing that justice delayed was justice denied. She was asked to provide sureties and landed properties as
proofs to secure her bail which she met. Meanwhile, the sacked RVTH
spokesman Pa Malick Mboob, Reporter Chief Manneh, SGT Buba Jammeh and
scores of other detainees are still languishing in jail. The country's
Justice Minister Sheik Tijan Hydara was said to have told the NIA that
there was no law in the country to prosecute the detainees since the
Freedom Newspaper was not legally registered in The Gambia. As the
situation appears, only a court order or a Presidential pardon can set
the detainees free.
