Breaking News:Divisions In The Ruling APRC-MPS Targeted For Replacement!

Some APRC NAMS Vowed to Run Under Independent Ticket If.....

                 By Staff Writer Karafa Badjie

There is a big division in the ruling APRC as sources hinted that parliamentarians were being targeted for replacement in the coming legislative elections. The MPS lined up to be replaced were blamed by the party's leadership for not delivering the goods, this paper has been reliably informed. In the meantime, the APRC has identified a committee in charge of identifying would be MP'S to fill the positions of these unnamed MPS to be replaced, said my source. According to sources some APRC bigwigs has been criss-crossing the country with the sole aim of soliciting votes in the coming elections due soon. Our source said there would be radical changes in Banjul, CRD, Basse, KMC and other areas within the country.

The APRC continued the source, has been active laying the ground work in opposition strongholds across the country. Some APRC MPS who spoke to this paper said if replaced they will run against the very party they supported over the years. The MPS vowed to run on an independent ticket in the event the APRC decides to replace them. The party they said was hijacked by some selfish militants who they say were only interested in lining their pockets to the detriment of the masses.

While the APRC is busy at this hour trying to canvass for votes secretly, the opposition is yet to be decided on their next line of action. The suit that was  filed to over turn September's polls by the opposition coalition led by Human rights lawyer Ousainou Darboe was dismissed by Chief Justice AK Savage. Savage  grounds for the dismissal of the said high profile suit was premised on what he calls Darboe's failure to appear in court to defend his case. But leaks from the UDP led alliance suggest that the opposition were committed to pursuing the said case despite Savage's ruling. While the court had ruled that Darboe should pay D5,000 dalasi cost to the defendant, this paper has been reliably informed that  the UDP alliance were determined to see that justice prevails in the said case, which is attracting local and international attention. Mr.Darboe is yet to make a formal statement on the outcome of the said court ruling.

The Freedom Newspaper was informed by APRC party sources that the President was interested in capturing the entire seats in the National Assembly in a bid to realize his one party state dream. If it turns out that the opposition happens to  boycott  the coming polls on the grounds of lack of level playing field, all indications suggest that the Gambia would be a one party state. Local political commentators argued that in the absence of an opposition merger non of the parties can make a significant performance in the coming polls. They also warned that a boycott might legitimize Jammeh's mandate and would lead to an unpredictable political climate.

The past Presidential elections were marred by intimidation and reports of electoral fraud. Non Gambians from the southern province of Casamance were issued with voters cards to vote, the opposition alleges in their protest letters shortly after the polls. Despite the opposition's claims of electoral fraud, the Commonwealth and other election monitors say the polls were free and fair. They say the outcome of the polls represents the wishes of the Gambian people and thus okayed the elections.

The new opposition NADD led by Halifa Sallah has so far conceded defeat. One of its party leaders Lamin Waa Juwara, who happens to be an arch critic of President Jammeh in a statement said Gambians voted for President Jammeh while he blasted the opposition for not putting their house in order. Juwara's statement followed the rejection of the election results by the UDP led alliance. Days later,  his party leader Halifa Sallah released a dossier cataloging the reasons responsible for the opposition poor performance in the said polls. Sallah's statement focuses more on voter apathy, lack of unified opposition, voter intimidation and electoral malpractices. Going by their statements, NADD had not rejected the polls fairness in totality. It  was more concerned about the factors leading to the opposition electoral woes. Sallah a first time Presidential aspirant polled only five percent of the total votes cast while his opponent Ousainou Darboe polled slightly over 27 percent. Incumbent President Yahya Jammeh had 65 percent.
