Congratulations To Our Colleagues At The Gambia Journal- One Year of Great Job!
Congratulations to our colleagues at the Gambia Journal for their one year anniversary. The Journal is now one year old. We salute the paper's dynamic editors and reporters for the brilliant job they have been doing to bring up-to-date, reliable, accurate and balanced information to its readers. We urge the Journal staffers to keep up the good job. We at the Freedom Newspaper valued their tremendous efforts to "contribute to the nation's fragile democratization process, by using the might of the pen to expose a brutal dictatorship, which is  hell bent on oppressing the rights and liberties of  our people. "

As rightly pointed out by the paper's Editors Brother Mbye Sarr and Muhammed Lamin Sillah, the country's private media should remain united and complement each other's efforts. We should not perceive each other as adversaries, but partners in development. We should be able to network and share editorial information. After all, we all want to see justice, democracy and good governance in the Gambia. As press men and women, we owe a big responsibility to our country, in terms of news dissemination. Together, we can make a difference in our quest to expose a despotic administration.

We were highly touched by the remarks made by the Journal, regarding the ongoing media attacks spearheaded by the Jammeh  administration against the private press, including this very paper, Freedom. We appreciate the Journal's firm position in condemning the mistreatment meted out to the Freedom Newspaper's subscribers by the bully NIAS. The Journal was very right, when it said that 2006 was a difficult year for our private press. Indeed. The Independent Newspaper was closed , the Freedom Newspaper hacked, its subscribers exposed to systematic torture, while the murder case of our dear colleague and mentor Deyda Hydara is still lingering in the air. This administration is not keen at taking  Deyda's murderers to book.

The Gambia Journal Management were bold enough to admit its successes and short comings during the period in question. As journalists, we should be ready to take responsibility for our actions. We should apologize  if  we feel that what we reported is inaccurate. For the Journal to repeatedly regret about reporting the alleged dead story of sacked MP Duta Kamaso, goes to show that "the paper's management are committed to the truth." The paper has demonstrated beyond all reasonable doubt that its preoccupation is to report the truth and nothing but the truth. We respect them for their stance. As the saying goes"to err is human."We are all boud to make mistakes.  We should understand that not all stories can be verified considering how this administration censors information.

As we join our colleagues at the Gambia Journal to grace this auspicious occasion, we urge the Jammeh government to bring the killers of Deyda Hydara to book. We would also want this administration to explain the whereabouts of Daba Marena and four others, who were believed to have been summarily executed in grand style by Jammeh's hit squad. The families of the above mentioned former public servants deserve the right to prepare a decent burial for their loved ones. We also ask the government to end the culture of impunity and lawlessness in the Gambia. Once again, we say congratulations to our colleagues at the Gambia Journal for the good work.  The Freedom Train shall one day land in our country, God willing.
The struggle continues.
