My task today is to analyse boy Jammeh's inuagural speech delivered at his 3rd term swearing in. Read on. In bold are excerpts from the speech and the rest my reactions.
"It is not easy to build a nation". That is why we ask you not to run it
like your zoo/home. Run it like it belongs to all of us. Consult with people who know more than you do.OK? Stop the hiring and firing of hard working men and women of Gambia. If you believe that your hiring and firings are genuine, give reasons so Gambians would know…transparency. But any govt. that operates behind the curtain stands to be suspected of ill play.
"Is it impossible? No! By the grace of The Almighty Allah, it is possible. But it will only be possible when we as Gambians put the destiny of this country into our own hands and hearts"
Nonsense!!! Oops, did I say that? Yes I did. How can we? Tell me Mr. "Accident" tell me when you do things your own way. If you have now decided to change your way, welcome on board the human race wagon since you were way too far from it.
"As from today, I appeal to everyone as Gambians, to work together as Gambians irrespective of tribe, religion, origin or region."
Do most of your appointments show this? Is Mr. Modou Sanyang at Grts the most qualified to head that institution? Our former army commander Baboucarr Jatta never deserved a ministerial post. Yet you gave him the ministry of interior and religious affairs. I have listened to this man babble not only at the camp but in other meetings such as at Kairaba and one could hardly believe that this man is the one in charge of our arm forces. He does not have a good command of the English Language. How about former NIA director Kujabi, Malifi Jarju, IGP Sonko, Ndong-Jatta wife of a man from your tribe,Colley of tourism and the other positions headed by retired soldiers who are not fit like your self to run a house thoughtless of a ministry and a state.
"I ask for forgiveness," Come on boy Jammeh be frank with Gambians if you mean what you say and say what you mean.Creeper!!!
"Fellow Gambians, Your Excellencies, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I have made pledges and promises and one thing is certain, what ever I promise, I mean it. I am not a politician". We have heard this one before. Want us to remind you of some unfulfilled promises? Let's go! Electricity and it failed. Gambia as a Singapore , it has failed. Transparency failed, probity failed, accountability failed, Soldiers with a difference failed. The promise you meant and did was to kill 20000 Gambians and go to sleep. You may not have killed that much yet but you have started and if we don't stop you, only God knows how far you will go on with this madness of yours. The day you reach this mark, we will skin you alive, trust me.
"Let us reconcile as Gambians and work together for the development of this country."
After you have killed fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, husbands, chased 1000s out of Gambia and still holding others unlawfully in prisons without charge. Boy Jammeh, don't play tricks with Gambians. We are smarter than you know. As I listened, I felt like walking through that crowd and choke you by your duck neck. If you mean what you said, let your actions show it. Please stop the rhetoric and back it with actions.
"Fellow Gambians, this is your government" Really? Then allow us to have a say in things. Open GRTS and Radio Gambia to all Gambian regardless of party affiliation. Allow the independent media to operate withiout intimidation. We have laws use them and not the gun, you jungle man.
"One thing that I want to emphasise is, to become an economic super power, needs a lot of hardwork, loyalty, honesty and of course discipline" Honesty? Do you know anything like that when you have many skeletons in your closets. Jack quit playing with us man!!!
"When I joined the Armed Forces as a recruit" Stop lying, you never joined the Armed Forces as a recruit, you joined the Gerdarmerie, then was transfered into the Armed Forces when the Gerdarmerie ceased to exist. Tell the children the truth. You have not even finished your speech and you have started being dishonest to the kids. Comrade please come down that stage and shut up. Sometimes I am tempted to empty an RPG into your mouth when I listen to you tell stories.
"We have to respect our leaders; we have to respect the elders, and teachers. Anybody who is in authority, we have to respect him. Remember that someday you may be in a position of authority, and you will want people to respect you. If you don't respect your elders today, your juniors will not respect you tomorrow."
The best student for this line is you. We have many of your words in tapes. You can only fool the kids, Oga not us. Have you lost your mind to teach about respect when you yourself don't have it? Respect is reciprocal, it is earned and deserved.
"Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, in the next five years, in fact with regards to electricity by the end of 2007, power outages will be a thing of the past because without electricity, we can never achieve the dream of becoming the Silicon Valley of Africa. Without electricity, we cannot become an economic superpower".
There are two things here, we have heard numerous electrical promises which for years now. Let us hope this one goes through after a third try. Is Lady Nene Mcdoull listening? Town Crier told you this before and your boss is quoting me. We need electricity to computerise schools and not vice versa. We can't operate them using ocean water.
"Concerning what has happened in the past, I forgive all of you and I expect all of you to forgive me"
What are you talking about boy Jammeh? Be manly enough to face Gambians and tell us what you've done so that we can forgive you. Stop acting like a dumb person, speak up! How can we forgive you, if we don't know what happened? Tell us baby boy. Secondly we can forgive you if whatever you are talking about has stopped. But if it is still going on, how do you expect us to forgive you? We did not wrong you, you wronged us. If we did wrong you, tell us how and we will humbly apologize without mincing words like you are doing.
Stay tuned until Town Crier comes your way.
