Journalist Gheran Senghore Reacts To Freedom Editorial!
By Gheran Senghore, former Observer Reporter
Thanks for re-igniting the debate on issues surrounding the late journalist, Omar Barrow's memorial fund. I have, for several years been trying to track down the actual account in which the money collected was deposited but to no avail. On several ocassions in 2005, I have tried contacting Shefiff about the money to enable Omar's widow and daughter to have access to it but always end up with excuses that to my mind hold no water.
The question now is for Shefiff and whosoever is responsible to account for the funds in question. How are they going to justify that their need for this was greater than that of a widow and a fatherless child. Someone needs to explain why The Barrow family has not received that money and the only person we know best to do so is Shefiff Bojang. There are many other questions that need to be asked concerning this issue because to me this is not a matter one can easily ignore.
It is indeed a shame that such deceit and betrayal would befall a man such as Omar and his family. Omar was a good man, a man who would sacrifice the little he has for every one. He would never have done the same to Shefiff's family if the tables were turned. I also feel that The Gambia Press Union has a moral duty to investigate this matter.
Omar was an active member of the union and as a matter of principle the union owes him a duty and responsibility in ensuring accountability by confronting those who were entrusted with the fund. Afterall, Sheriff too was part of the GPU......or is he still? Gheran | Posted on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 (Archive on Wednesday, February 28, 2007) Posted by PNMBAI Contributed by PNMBAI
