Breaking News:Daily Observer on the brink of bankruptcy!Paper's production dramatically reduces! By Landing Badjie,Our National Correspondent
Lack of sales is hindering the Daily Observer Newspaper. The paper had dramatically reduces its production capacity. The Observer which used to produce 7,000 copies per day is now producing only 1000 copies, the Freedom Newspaper gathered. For some reasons, Gambians have lost faith into the paper, which used to be the country's onetime leading news medium. The Daily Observer Company is at present in turbulent times, Freedom can reveal. The newspaper, considered as a government mouthpiece, do not onlyhave to contend with the problems of dwindling public interest and confidence in the paper but also its dwindling financial health. Observers warned that if the current poor business trend continues, the Observer is likely to send some of its managers who are provided with fat salaries. Local freelance reporters are also at the receiving end as well. Getting their stories published on the Observer is not easy these days. The paper's management say they need to minimize cost to keep the paper going.
The paper's economic health is seemingly fast-dwindling if current indications are anything to go by. Aside the random hiring and firing of staff in the company, the Observer is now engaged in a serious cost-cutting process. One of such is the astronomic reduction of the amount of copies that the paper now circulates.
Just of last week, the paper's offices got besieged by vendors who frantically fought to grab their copies for onward distribution in the streets and offices. But while some may see this development as a positive one, the bottomline is that the paper is now producing only 1000 copies daily as against its previous daily production of 5,000 to 7,000 copies depending on the occasion.Newspaper vendors are also complaining. The Daily Observer's move to reduce production rate is causing them their lives. They relied on such paper sales to pay their rents and take care off other family needs. With the current state of affairs befalling the Observer, the paper has no choice, but to cut down their number of staffers.
People who spoke to our national correspondent say the observer is no more the Observer they know as the paper is now obsessed with nothing other than propping up a mindless dictator.
