he spending spree of Gambia’s iron hand dictator Yahya Jammeh, is getting out of hand. Imagine our own self imposed President giving a tip of twenty thousand US dollars ($20,000) to dentist staffers in New York City. Jammeh was billed to pay the sum of $6,000 dollars, but after the servicing of his teeth, delighted Jammeh gave the dental staff over three times tip of the sum he was billed to pay. Our sources are very credible and we have no cause to doubt their reliability.

In May of 2002, Jammeh was in the US to attend the UN children Summit. It was during his visit, he scheduled an appointment with a renowned Iranian dentist in New York. In this country, people hardly walk with cash, but for Jammeh he had a briefcase filled with US bank notes at the time. We gathered that his dental bill was paid in cash. Despite repeated pleas for Jammeh to reconsider the $20,000 tip, defiant Jammeh said the sum in question was nothing to him. He went ahead to give the said sum to the female dental staff. Chey!!!! Jammeh Jilanka. A poor rural boy turned a millionaire over night. What an interesting state of affairs.
Our source hinted that during that visit Jammeh cashed a chase Manhattan bank check, amounting to eight hundred thousand dollars ($800,000 dollars.) According to our well placed source, on top of the check reads” the office of the President.” This in short, implied that the office of the President is running an overseas bank account unknown to our citizens. Jammeh himself cashed the check which he lavishly spent prior to his return to Banjul.
This is a serious state of affairs. While Gambians are dying of hunger and starvation Jammeh is hell bent on plundering our nation’s treasury. Does it make any sense for him to give a tip of $20,000 dollars, three times over the amount he was billed to pay? How will this New Yorkers dental staff view our toy President? Charity begins at home. You cannot pretend to be magnanimous outside, when your own people are dying of hunger. This is total madness Jammeh. We learned that your delegation were very upset about your spending spree madness. Imagine $800,000 dollars? This is not a small sum of money. The money could have been channeled to our ailing health sector, which is experiencing acute drug shortages.
Jammeh, is good at denying his evil deeds, but let him try to make noise over this one. We have more damaging evidence to publish if he dares dispute our story. This hospital he visited was not meant for the poor, so we learned. We learned that he was seen on arrival by a renowned Iranian dentist. Jammeh spent about three days visiting that hospital in a bid to clean his teeth.
The dental staff spent a significant amount of time trying to whiten his teeth. Happy with the good customer service rendered to him our mad President, said it was time to bluff the Americans, as he too had succeeded in getting some part of the late Mobutu Sissoho’s wealth. The staff could not believe when he handed $20,000 dollars tip to them.
How can The Gambia develops when the likes of Jammeh, Amadou Samba and others are hell bent on operating criminal enterprises to the detriment of the nation? Jammeh and Samba are working hand in hand to hijack our fragile economy. Samba, had succeeded in blocking would be investors from coming to The Gambia. A case in question was over $10 Million telecommunication company. The said company based in South Africa, was supposed to engage in GSM mobile phone network in The Gambia, but Samba took the GSM contract from them. These folks always asked for kick backs before they will let any investor to operate in The Gambia. You must buy them luxurious houses, benz or wire them several millions before they will consider your investment request. They have denied our youths employment opportunities.
The same Amadou Samba, hijacked the flower importation deal with the sole aim of inflating the price, thereby causing untold hardship to our suffering masses. At one of the meetings, Samba said openly that it was time to send the Lebanese business men out of business. He told Jammeh that the flower market should be given to him, so that the Lebanese can go hungry. Samba’s intention at the time was to add more fire to the growing inflation hitting the impoverished nation.
With all these well coordinated money laundering, economic sabotage, spearheaded by Jammeh and Samba, the IMF and the World Bank are yet to sanction this government. There is no fiscal discipline in The Gambia. It is time for the IMF and the World Bank to send a fact finding mission to The Gambia. Our country is in the hands of criminals. Failure to act now , will lead to a total break down of economic activities. Serious investors are no longer going to The Gambia. The likes of Jammeh and Samba are frustrating genuine investors. We rest our case.
