April 10: 45 AK47 From The Army
I would like to join my fellow patriotic Gambians and all concern humanity in commemorating the seventh anniversary of the Gambias most darkest day-April 10. I would like to at this point pay homage to the lost ones who were exercising their constitutional rights and getting killed by trigger-happy security forces of President Yahya Jammeh under his direct command.
However, there is something that very few people knew about, which I would like the whole world to know from today. I was at the Agency on April 10, 2000 when we receive a call from the then Chief of Defense Staff, Colonel Baboucarr Jatta. He was putting us in the picture that Rex King, then Inspector General of Police has requested an amount of forty-five (45) AK47 automatic rifles from the army. These, according to Col. Jatta have been dispatch to him with full ammunition. He also said he has receive orders from the National Security Council that he should send his men on the ground to quell the situation as he put it coup is imminent.
However, while in direct close consultation with the Vice President, we were told that President Jammeh said the demonstration should be crush out at all cost. This worried some of us but it is the final order. Shortly after, I was on the ground. It was like the Gambia was in war. I was baffled that Gambians can deliberately kill their fellow countrymen for nothing. Between 11:30 to 12:30, I visited the RVTH to see for myself of the news I am hearing. The result everybody knows. May Allah bless the souls of the lost ones and some of us are waiting for day we will testify before a court of law.
