In a drug case involving a 30 year old youth, Magistrate Mbai at the Brikama Magistras' Courts passed his verdict in a huge sum in default to serve 10 years.Kalifa Jammeh, a 30 year old youth standing trial for possesion of 5kg., 280 grammes of cannabi sativa, a prohibited drug was found guilty and was sentensed.

According to the particulars of the offense, on or about the 15th day of February 2007, at Kotu Kuwareh in the Kanifing Municipality area, Kalifa Jammeh had in his possession 5kg, 280 gramme of cannabi sativa, a prohibited drug for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to section 43(4) of the Drug Control Act 2003 as amended.

However, when the charge sheet was read to the accused and interpretted in a local language, he understood the charge and pleaded guilty, thus begging the court to temper mercy with justice.

Senior Magistrate Edrissa Mbai said since the police presented Abdoulie Ceesay, representing the National Drug Enforcement Agency, he has proved his case beyond all reasonable doubts. "The accused is hereby convicted to the fine of D1 Million in default to serve ten years imprisonment with hard labour." He said.
