Magistrate Jammeh sends Abortion signnal Magistrate Jammeh sends Abortion signnal
By Famara Jammeh
Two women were convicted and sentenced today at the Kanifing Magistrates’ court before Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh for commiting abortion. Mariama Tirera and Sidat Bangura were each today convicted and sentenced by Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court to pay D3000.00 in default to serve one year imprisonment.
The duo were brought and charged along with jailed Dam Jeng an RVTH staff for aborting a two-month old pregnancy. The first and third accused, Mariama Tirera and Sidat Bangura pleaded not guilty while the second accused, Dam Jeng, pleaded guilty and was subsequently sentenced to two years in jail.
Magistrate Jammeh told the accused persons that he was sending a message to the public to serve as a deterrent to others in the commission of such offences. The hospital has distanced itself from Dam Jeng. They said he was not a nurse as alleged by some papers but a lab assistant. But the man knows and others too that he is a nurse. His colleagues too know it.
