Breaking News:Michael Scales donates another $550 dollars to Freedom Newspaper! Editors to purchase a new lap top!
A friend and strong supporter of the Freedom Newspaper, Michael Scales has extended another $550 dollars donation to the paper to enable its Editors to secure a lab top that would be used to update the paper 24/7. Mr.Scales's intervention came at a time when our main office computer is experiencing technical problems. To some extent, this had hindered the day to day operations of the paper. This was the computer Jammeh and his agents hacked in May of 2006.
In a letter addressed to the Freedom Newspaper, Mr.Scales announced the gesture he extended to the paper. He advised the Freedom Editors to check their paypal account, as he had wired the said sum to Freedom. Scales said he is ready to stand by Freedom come what may. He says the Editorial staff of Freedom are doing a fine job by keeping Gambians and friends of The Gambia abreast about political and economic developments taking place in The Gambia.
Few months ago, Mr.Scales sponsored a sports column on the Freedom Newspaper. The pilot project was in tune of $1000 dollars. Our good friend wants Freedom to expand its coverage in the areas of sports. As a long time sports fan, Michael Scales had contributed immensely on development of Sports in The Gambia. He extended similar donations to local sports clubs in The Gambia. This earned him as an honorary citizen of Gunjur.
Reacting to the gesture, Freedom Publisher and Managing Editor Pa Nderry M'Bai said" The donation came at a right time. Scales's gesture would go a long way in meeting the needs and aspirations of our readers. As a leading news media, we strive to provide our readers with timely, up-to-date, balanced, objective and accurate news all the time. This cannot be possible without reliable computer. As a news outlet, we need computers, digital cameras, mini tape recorders and other logistics to get you good stuff every morning. Michael Scales has been very supportive to Freedom. We advise other Freedom fans to emulate him. This paper's survival lies on kind hearted folks interested in promoting media freedom and democracy in The Gambia. We have no intention of charging people for the news they read on Freedom on a daily basis. We need your support in improving the content of the paper. It requires money and hard work to run a leading paper like Freedom. Gambians and non Gambians are like are being urged to extend helping hand to Freedom. This is the paper providing you with all your reading needs. We are determined to serve you."
Editor M'Bai said the Freedom Newspaper is transparent and democratic. " All donations extended to this paper would be made public, unless parties concerned chose to remain anonymous. We believe in acknowledging gestures extended to us by freedom supporters. Mr.Scales is one such individual. His relationship with Freedom is based on trust, mutual respect, and the paper's uncompromising editorial stance. Scales is a modest, down to earth, upright, humble and straight forward person who had never attempted to meddle into Freedom's editorial policy. Each time he writes a piece, he would tell the Editor to check if the piece in question was fit for publication. He politely asked to be given space to air his views. That's the type of person Michale Scales."said Editor M'Bai.
According to the Freedom Newspaper Editor, the lap top would help to update the site 24/7. " Our readers are being assured of breaking news stories by the second, minute and the hour. We shall report the news as it breaks. We have reporters in all corners of The Gambia. If it means spending our last dime to run this paper, we would do it. We believe in originality and quality. A serious Newspaper must have home based reporters and not to rely on unconfirmed or unreliable news tip-offs. Stories filed by our stringers are commissioned, despite our budgetary constraints. This paper pays for all news articles filed by Freelance journalists and staff writers in The Gambia. Gambian based journalists interested in selling their materials are free to contact us."
Finally, Editor M'Bai thanked Mr.Scales for standing by Freedom. " This paper is proud of you and your family. We cherish your generous contributions to Freedom. We say a big thank you Mr.Scales. Our regards to your wife and family. We look forward meeting you one day. Many thanks…
Below is a letter sent to us Mr.Scales regarding the donation he extended to Freedom.
Dear Mr.Editor,
Again,I have come to the aid of the Gambian People,Not for self esteem,or self elevation. If i wanted to show all that i have done for The Gambians over the years,i could easily show you documents that would astound you. This is not my way. There have been many occaisions when i have stood for President Jammeh. There have been many other occaisions when i have stood for childern isolated and in need of medicines or sports wares or shoes.I have argued the case of the Gambian ,through the highest chambers in England.I could show you a paper from a top official in Whitehall..that says.".Michael Scales has single handedly ,Raised the cause of the Gambian People, into areas of The British Government, that had previously not been considered."...The betterment of The African..is not a walk in the park..that can be considered lightly by the faint hearted....It is a crusade...and a very noble cause. Africa is crying out for Good Governence and Leaders that can offer solutions to unite the people. The problems faced are Not insurmountable..given that all build together and walk the hill hand in hand.I make this appeal to President Jammeh and to Lawyer Darboe and to all members of the Gambian Government.Stop !!! to consider this.?
Think not what your country can do for you///or self interest....But what you can do for your country and its impoverished people. The tide of self greed and importance has got to be turned to the benefit of ALL the people of The Gambia.Give up the ways of torture and intimidation...These are not foriegners..that you outcast..but your own people and blood.I have watched carefully the work of Freedom Newspaper.I have tested there principals time and time again. But always they did not deviate from the peaceful path of reasonable and peaceful argument. To consider that Pa Nderry Mbai and others work separately to feed there families then spend all there time informing and debating the issues for your consideration..leads me to believe that their Mentor..the Late Deyda Hydara..Must have been the closest Gambia has come to producing a saint. It is the memory of such people who have given there lives to peace and freedom that continue to inspire the next generation.I have no doubt at all..that one day Africans will unite and inspire the world with its culture of forgiveness....The tide is turning..slowly..but make no mistake...it is turning.
