Gambia ALERT: Fourth journalist sacked in months
Gambia ALERT: Fourth journalist sacked in months
Abdoulie John, a journalist working for the Banjul-based pro-government "Daily Observer" newspaper, was on October 9, 2007 dismissed by the Managing Director, Saja Taal.
John is the fourth journalist to be sacked from the "Daily Observer" in recent months.
Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) sources reported that the journalist was sacked for corresponding for a foreign media. Sources quoted John’s dismissal letter as stating, "You have been warned to stop serving as a foreign correspondent. We have no option but to terminate your services with the newspaper."
The "Daily Observer" management, according to sources insisted that the sacked journalist’s conduct was "incompatible" with the newspaper’s "house rules."
Other journalists, who have been sacked by Saja Taal, are Ebrima Jaw Manneh, Lamin Dibba and Seedy Bojang.
Taal, who is a close confidante of President Jammeh, is alleged to have masterminded the arrest of Chief Ebrima Manneh, who has been in detention in an unknown location for over a year.
