Gambia:11/6/2007:Gambia’s firebrand politician Lamin Waa Juwara , says he never consulted NDAM’S External Wing about his recent appointment as a Member of the Interim Management Committee of the Brikama Area Council. Mr.Juwara made this declaration today in an exclusive interview with the Freedom Newspaper. He was responding to a question as to whether he Juwara had consulted his colleagues before accepting the President’s appointment. Juwara says the overwhelming majority of the Gambian public welcomed his move to accept the President’s job offer, but was quick to add that his party’s External Wing were never in the picture. “Yes, those on the ground here supported my move to accept the appointment. I’m yet to contact members of the External Wing of NDAM, but I will soon do so. Generally, the overwhelming majority of the people of all political persuasions have welcomed the move. The President ‘s offer and our acceptance, most of them think is the beginning of a healing process and maturity in our political dispensation. It’s not common in The Gambia, but it’s very common in Senegal.” Juwara posited.
The NDAM leader says he have no regrets whatsoever for answering to President Jammeh’s call to serve the nation. Juwara told the Freedom Newspaper that progressive Gambians welcomed his appointment. He maintains that it was never a wrong decision on his part to accept the said appointment. He says he was aware of the fact some people might not approve his move, but insists that life must goes on, no matter what. “No decision can be acceptable to everyone and every politician must expect that. The onus is on me to prove the detractors wrong. As I told you, of course it was a surprise and a small appointment at the local level. If I decline to accept it, there would be people who would say I did the wrong thing. And equally if I accept it, some will say I did the wrong thing.” The popular politician noted.
Mr.Juwara used the interview to clarify that he was never appointed as the Chairman of the Brikama Area Council, but was hired as an interim member of the Council’s Management Committee. He says contrary to what was reported in the press he was appointed as Committee Member and not as Chairman. “My appointment came as a surprise to me. I think it is a step in the right direction. You don’t have to see every thing from a partisan angle. A lot of people are happy about my appointment. I’m a member of the interim Management Committee and not the Chairman as reported by some Newspapers. The Governor is the Chairman Abdou FM Badjie. I think despite the interim nature of the appointment, we will try to make maximum impact under the Chairmanship of Mr.Badjie, who is a former of Parliamentarian. Very experienced man as an educationist for that matter. From my own observations and as a resident of Brikama, I see him as a very competent man. With the backing of the Management team, we should be able to make out a program that would enable the incoming local Government administration can continue with.” Juwara observed.
As the NDAM strongman had decided to throw his party’s towel to team up with the Government of the day, Mr.Juwara says he had brilliant plans to revamp Brikama’s ailing environmental sanitation. For Juwara, maintaining a clean and safe environment is a most. This, the politician observed would go a long way in the advancement of people’s health in that Community. “My primary concern is about the environment. As you may know, there is an anti littering law and you have the National Environment Agency , I think the onus should be on the local authorities to sensitize the people and facilitate the implementation of the law. You also know that the monthly cleansing exercise called as setsetal should be reinforced. We should be able to achieve a lot. We should be able to lay the foundation and make so that everybody is aware of environmental issues.” Juwara tells the Freedom Newspaper.
Coming back to his appointment, Juwara observed that "is the beginning of a new chapter between the Government and the country’s opposition. Juwara says serving one’s country is beyond politics and therefore detractors should not misinterpret his decision. “At the political level, I think it is very healthy because there are certain issues that are national and above partisan politics. As a senior citizen as you have said, if the President sees it fit to appointment me, I think I should accept it. Because this is an area I have wealth of working experience.”
When asked whether it was difficult for him to accept the President’s offer, Juwara widely known as Mbarodi replied in the negative. “ The nature of the job does not make it difficult for me to accept the job. As a local resident and with my experience if I’m called to a job that I think I’m competent to do , then my primary concern is the service to the society that I should render. I thank the President for selecting me and I hope this is going to be the beginning of appointing people on the other side of the political divide if their services are needed because of their competence of a particular area.” Juwara added.
Mr.Juwara then promises the Gambian public that the new Brikama Area Council Management Committee would live up to expectations. He expressed the hope that tax payers monies would serve its purpose. Juwara says he "is more than willing to work with the Government of day, especially on matters relating to Community advancement." He says he would "serve anywhere his services are needed."
