Deplorable Road Condition Hampers Transportation in The Gambia!!
As Drivers Dodge Ebo Town Road
By Staff Writer Modibo B. Jarju
The road leading to Ebo Town in the KMC area has turned to a no go area by taxi and "Gele gele" drivers turning the city town into a ghost town by the virtual absence of vehicles using the route. The three to four kilometre road stretch from Serrekunda by the Brikama High Way has become a no go area by drivers with either private, taxi or "gele gele" since the end of the rains. Everyone in the area is wondering why such a road, where over Four Hundred Thousand inhabitants live should be left to the mercy of God.
Many citizens including Mr. Bureh, an elderly citizen believe that the road was poorly constructed for Jammeh to gain more popularity in the area. Since then, barely after a year of the construction or two, the roads now look like the illicit diamond mining areas in Angola. What has baffled the inhabitants is that, when there is rain the area receives the worst of it all, leaving sickness and poor sanitation.
As the rains have ended the pool waters are left to create mosquitoes and to hamper free movement of vehicles and persons. Salieu Barry, a Gambia High school student says, "I do not have transport fare to pay from here to Serrekunda. I only try as hard as possible to move between houses to get to the Brikama High Way. It is sad that before I reach there I am dirty and needing water to clean up again."
Other elders believe that much has not been done to help out with cleanliness and good roads in the area. "We voted massively for the APRC government but we seem to be the most neglected even by the so called KMC. May be with the change of head at the KMC there would be some consideration for our area." Fatoumattar Baldeh said.
The roads are impassable and the drivers have struggled to make inlet roads in other areas where they are digging bad holes for the rains again come the rainy season. What is left now for the inhabitants is for their houses to fall and give way to the vehicles. After the heavy rains, now comes the vehicles.
It could be recalled that Ebo Town had been affected by rain and running water since there is no drainage in the area. There was report of people sleeping in flooded houses and water wells were contaminated by the rain waters.
Many have blamed Jammeh for neglecting them and concentrating on others but they voted massively for him in the past elections. "We are not fools to be fooled twice." Says a school teacher in the area asking to remain anonymous.
