POEM:Is it? Isn't it? Author:Essa Bokarr SEY.
Poem:Is it? Isn't it?
It is,it isn't.
Is it? Isn't it?
Is it easy or at ease?
It whips,it weeps.
It sleeps,it slips.
It is the necter of roses.
It is the sachet keeping the doses of those dear desires.
It eats,it itches too.
It is a belief.
Do you believe in it?
Pick it before that evil niddle pricks it.
It is grease,it is grace.
Somewhere it is weak.
Somewhere it is strength itself.
I cannot see through because it bleak.
I can see through because it is bright.
It is something.
It is nothing.
It is clean,it is dirty.
Cleansing is not cleaning.
Clinging is not limping.
Hanging is not singing.
It says...Teaching shouldn't be bleaching!
Take it but do not leave it!
Leave it or take it? Take it or leave?
Whiich is which?
Bring it in,bring it out.
Oh this meaning!
Everything means something!
Author's comments: This poem is a general concept revealing more of the hidden nature of things than what we see and know.
It centers around thought as a factor that pushes the huge wheels of life's chariots. I was really pleased when I saw brother Cherno Omar Barry,Yero Jallow,Suntou and the editor himself "stir" the good side of Gambian writing. Writers cannot dictate how readers interpret what they write. This means the audience or readership are the walking mirrors of those who write. Every person who writes finds society so useful. It is the reflector that helps thought bounce back with different images. This makes me pay tribute to Chinua Achebe of Nigeria,Cyprian Ekwensi of Kenya and other African writers who have been a source of inspiration for me from my days as a school boy to now. Writers like Birago Diop,Sembene Ousmane,Amadou Hampathe Ba have also left a lasting mark in African libraries and in many others in the world at large.
The same special regards are being extended to our Gambian writers like Late Ebou Dibba, Lenrie Peters,my brother Baba Galleh Jallow,Balla Saho,Hassoum Ceesay Jr.( an author I admire) and many more. The same goes to sister Mariam Khan whom I do not know personally, however I have high regards for her talent. I cannot end this without mentioning Colonel Samsudeen Sarr an icon on the board who accessed pacesetters a long time ago. May The Almighty help Gambia's men and women of the papyrus and feathers excel (writers)! Remember the old adage:"He or she who wants to excel is always misunderstood"
Likewise misunderstanding is always replaced by understanding. We will be there!
The latest development from Cherno Omar Barry is worthy of emulation.
Merci! Greetings to all Gambian writers from
