Breaking News: NIA threatens The Point over Freedom newspaper
Senegambianews.com has been reliably informed that agents of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) have walked into the offices of The Point newspaper on Garba Jahumpa road in the city of Bakau, threatening staff to refrain from sending reports to a US based online paper.

According to our dependable sources, the NIA informed The Point that they [agents] have received reports that there are reporters working for the paper, who also send reports to the Freedom newspaper. Freedom newspaper is published by a former senior reporter for The Point newspaper, Pa Ndery Mbai.

"During the meeting a reporter with The Point [name withheld] disclosed names of two senior editorial staff members, who allegedly file reports for the Freedom newspaper", our source stated.

The NIA however, warned The Point that the agency will continue investigating the matter and that those found culpable would be severely dealt with.

It could be recalled that Freedom newspaper, a North Carolina based online paper critical of Yahya Jammeh's regime, was once allegedly hacked by the Gambia government cyber wizards. The consequences were severe; some registered readers (subscribers) in the Gambia were traced, arrested and brutally tortured. Those tortured included former Daily Observer editor, Lamin Cham and Malick Mboob. Even the former Director-General of Gambia Radio and Television Services, Tombong Saidy was interrogated in connection with subscriptions to the online paper that reveals and accuses government of damning human rights abuses and unprecedented corruption.

The Point's co-founder and vocal critic of President Yahya Jammeh, Deyda Hydara was gunned down in December of 2004. No suspects have ever been arrested for that gruesome murder and the government later blames the late editor for his own death by accusing him of infidelity.
