letters from Freedom Readers:Christ George sent to the cleaners!!!

I find Chris George's castigation of this paper's writers to be without any merit whatsoever. I wander if Chris George has ever heard of advocacy journalism, but more importantly the idea that journalists cannot take a position on the issues they report about is ridiculous. That is old school journalism. In this day and age, journalism has evolved in such a way that many of the parameters that defined the profession have had to be rethought and reworked to meet through the challenges of this digital and instantaneous news age. Journalism today is a moving target.

In other words, the old paradigms that confined the profession to any four corners, no longer applies. There is hardly any newspaper or journalist here in America without a position one way or the other about the wars in Iraq. The vast majority oppose the war and George W. Bush, but only a few people challenge the positions these papers and people take. Right now, every journalism school here in America is struggling with the onslaught of the bloggers, this new frontier in journalism, a yet uncharted territory.

But, what offended me most is Mr. George's veiled attempt at defending the actions of this monster, Yahya Jammeh. I do not know your motivations, but I suspect that if you really mean what you write, then you may be living in a different Gambia than the one we know and love. So, rather than invest too much energy on flimsy excuses to defend Jammeh, I suggest you look at the bigger picture; the litany of human rights abuses which include murders, torture, frequent arrests and unlawful detentions, and Jammeh's corruption which is not lost to any right thinking person.

Once again, I will George that many of the things he learnt in journalism classes need updating. It is he, whose knowledge, rather than any writer here, that needs to adjust to this new advent of journalism. Most of the parameters within which journalists of the old school (George) operated, have been smashed and shattered to shreds.

Pa Mbye,

Let the likes of Christ George, Ebou Jallow and Sajar Taal shut their dirty mouths. Who among any of these barbarians dares question your professionalism in journalism ? I am yet to be convinced that another Pa Mbye will be born to add to the existing one. Our world will be in good shape. Those of us living in the Gambia are seriously ready to partner with Pa Mbye in making sure President Jammeh is exposed and tried like Charles Taylor.

Thank you Pa Mbye. As much as you protect our identities we will partner with you.
