At least twelve  detainees  who were cooling their feet behind bar at the Brikama Police Station have reportedly escaped from custody on Friday night and  their whereabouts except one still  remain something of a mystery at the time of filling this report.

According to authoritative sources, the escapees  include  criminals who were charged with various  offences  such as drug possession, stealing, and rape . " These people were accused of  different degrees of  offences and they  where supposed to be arraigned before a magistrates' court to the answer charges levelled against.  In fact,  one of  them is  being charged with  raping  a teenage  girl resident in Brikama town." said our sources at the Brikama

When contacted to shed light on the story, the station officer at Brikama police station Inspector Demba confirmed the veracity of the story, adding that his men are currently searching for these 'people'. He urged the general public particularly people who have clues to  report to the nearest police station so that they can be arrested and  brought to justice.

" Our men are now doing an all-out operation to track down these detainees. We  have in fact , arrested one of them in Tanji village and we are  still searching  for the rest ," said the  SO of Brikama Police.
Meanwhile, the news of the escape of these detaines has created anxiety, panic and confusion in the area, putting the integrity of the Police in an unfavorable light, as many people are now lambasting  for escape of these detainees.

Fatou Bah told Wise Man that one of the escapees ,  Ebou Bah,  has stolen her DVD player and D10,000,  alleging that Mr Bah might have bribed the police on duty to secure his release. " This is unbelievable how can 12 people escape like that! where are those on duty"she fumed.

Modou Dampha, of  Brikama also told Wise Man this not  the first time detainees  are escaping from police stations adding: " In fact i  always suspect  that detainees  will escape from custody  because anytime you  go to the Police Station to launch  complain you will  find not more than three police officers in the station and surprisingly most of them you will find   them sleeping or they have   left the station to go to check points  trying to stop   passersby in the night  to get some money from them.  What do expect will happen when all the officers on duty vacate the station  ? Automatically that is an open invitation for those detainees who have great athletic prowess to hit the road to try to regain their own  liberty," he said.
