Kombo Central  Students Hit hard by the problem

 BY WISE MAN
Students in Brikama and it satellite villages attending schools in the Greater Banjul Area   have registered their total disappointment with  the  APRC government for the failure to provide them with school buses, lamenting that the transportation bottlenecks is seriously hampering their education. " This problem is looming large and if the government continues to ignore it we will definitely embark on a peaceful demonstration because we have the legal right to do so," said our source.

Speaking to Freedom Newspaper,  Lamin Demba, a resident of Brikama and  a student at Gambia Senior Secondary School told Wise Man that  they are very unhappy with the Jammeh regime. The government, he went on , had  promised  us during  the 2006 presidential campaign that if they are voted into power they would address problems affecting the students, but they  seem to do only lip services," he posited.

According to Demba  he  pays  everyday D 30  for fare  to go to school, adding,  "  any day my dad is broke i have to  stay at home because i could not get transport to school. This thing is really affecting us and  the government must do something or else anything can happen. We're increasingly becoming frustrated and despondent because this thing is jeopardizing our education. "he fumed.

Musa Sanyang a Farato Village resident and a student at Muslim Senior Secondary School said, "this lack of school bus problem  has made me confused, i now   relay mostly on private vehicle drivers  going to Banjul to give me drive, because my parents are so poor that they would not afford to give me  D30 for  fare everyday , instead of giving me that money  they would rather use that on feeding for the whole family,  as you know nowadays things are hard here in The Gambia, the cost of basic commodities is sky rocketing by the day.  The government should help us with school buses  right now,"  he said.

Musukebba Touray a student at St Joseph's Senior Secondary School  from Busumbala village also pointed out that "this is unfortunate and  undone ; how can they built schools without providing  us with basic needs like school buses;  this is rubbish, we dont need white elephant projects." she said.

It would be recalled that there used to be regular  school bus services for students travelling from Brikama  to Banjul as well as other  areas but since the APRC  came  to power this much-need  services had been abruptly stopped and the main provider,The Gambia Public Transport Co-operation GPTC has also collapsed due to bankruptcy and other  logistically reasons.
