Breaking News: Protest At Brikama !!!
BY WISE MAN
A group of market vendors yesterday stormed into the offices of the Brikama Area Council (BAC) to protest their total opposition to a move to evict them at the Brikama Sandikaa following the alleged sale of the Sandikaa to a Lebanese investor.
Speaking to our correspondent, the Spokesperson of the group, Demba Sanneh said that they are very unhappy with BAC for selling the "Sandikaa" as well as forcing them to vacate the place to a new site near the new Craft Market.
Sanneh , a trader who sells Mango at the Sandikaa told Freedom newspaper , that the proposed the new site is very far as result it would not be ideal for their business operations.
" This is undone and unfair . The place they told us to move is too far from the main market. We would not be able to get customers to come over because of the distance".
Lamin Ceesay also a trader at the Sandikaa said that this is not the first time that BAC is relocating their market, saying that previously they were located near the Fire Service Headquarter . " But we were told to move from there because they said they were going to build some shops there but instead the place is now transformed to a taxi garage. Now again they told us to move from here without giving us tangible reasons . We will make sure we fight this to the end , " he said.
When contacted for comments, the Public Relations Officer of Brikama Area Council Serign Modou Njie said: " We told the affected vendors to move from that place because the council need the place for other development purposes."
When asked whether it is true that they have sold the place to one Lebanese businessman, he was bereft with words. "Not up to my knowledge and i am not aware of it" he posited.
Further asked what development project(s) are they going to do at the Sandikaa, he said when the project starts it will be know to all.
