Breaking News: Jammeh Says He does Not Care If A Bag Of Rice Cost D10,000!!!

President Yahya Jammeh has strongly warned Gambian men to change their laid-back attitude towards work, emphasizing that they should stay away from the Bantabas (rendezvous) to engage in serious farming in the coming season. "If the price for a bag of rice goes as high as D10,000 by September 2008 that is not going to be my problem because the people( i mean the Gambian men) have failed to go back to land," he said.
President Jammeh who was addressing a group of APRC supporters in day three of the Meet the People Dialogue Tour in Kaur said that Gambian people should take his his clarion call with a pinch of salt owing to the looming food crisis in the world. He underscored the need for all hands to be on deck to avert hunger and starvation in the Gambia.
"Who knows before September the price for bag of rice might rise to D2,000. We will even have to thank God if we see imported rice in the country. But i don't care if bag of rice increase up to D10,000 because if you listen to me it will not happen "he stressed.
Turning to the education sector, Jammeh called on the students to take their education seriously adding that they should take favorable advantage of the limitless opportunities provided to them by his administration . He promised to provide the students of Armitage Senior Secondary School with 210 bags of rice,two buses and a cash amount of D100,000. He also promised to develop the wharf in Kaur into regional port as well as fence their rice field.
Meanwhile, President Jammeh yesterday presided over a victory celebration in Janjanbureh , during which he disclosed that plans are at an advanced stage for the construction of bridge between Janjabureh and Sankuleh Kunda. He called on youth to have greater interest in agriculture since it is backbone of the economy.
The Secretary of State for Fisheries and Water Resources, Yankuba Touray urged parents to encourage their kids to enroll in vocational centres to learn sound entrepreneurial skills. That way, he said, will enable them to able to contribute meaningfully towards the socio-economic development of the country.
The National Assembly member for the area Kebba Touray commended the police for reducing the high rate of crime in Lower and Upper Saloum.
The Governor of Central River Region Njangi Touray assured the President of his people unalloyed support . Chief Alieu Jay Touray and Malick Mbye made similar remarks.
