$400 Donation For Exiled Point Editor!!!
Michael Scales has extended $200 donation to the former Point Editor Momodou Justice Darboe. The Editor of the Freedom Newspaper Pa Ndery M’bai, has also personally donated $200 dollars to Darboe. The donations were meant to support Darboe, whose life was recently threatened by the agents of The Gambian Government.
In a statement issued today both Editor Mbai and Scales reaffirmed their commitment to support persecuted Gambian journalists. “I franchise with several Gambian Communities. But Gunjur is my blood. I am certain the local community would expect me to assist any individual no matter what the cost. So many have said to me when I die ..they die. This is a huge burden for me that I will always honour and discharge with my last breath.” Said Michael Scales.
For his part, Editor Mbai remarked. “ Mr. Darboe was a good colleague of mine at the Point. I trained him and he had proven to be one of the best journalists in The Gambia today. Mr. Darboe used to interpret for me whilst on Voice of America assignments. He’s not only a good orator, but a seasoned writer. I am morally obliged to standby him during the times of difficulties. Justice Darboe is a true friend, brother and family member. He spent most of his time at my Manjai home. He is considered as a family member.” Said Editor Mbai.
Mr. Mbai said the Freedom Newspaper is considering setting up a media fund that would extend helping hands to persecuted African journalists. “ Despite our meager resources, we are determined to cater a budget that would help persecuted African journalists. We believe in promoting and defending press freedom.” Said Editor Mbai.
