By National Correspondent Momodou Darboe, in Cassamance
Senegal:7/11/08-The war-weary people of Cassamance are currently enjoying a relative peace after several years of separatist war characterized by widespread bloodshed, human rights abuses, pillaging, displacements and infinite insecurity.
According to our Banjul National Correspondent, who was recently in the Senegal province, life has returned to normal in several parts of the province. From tourism to farming, fishing to petty trading, sports to entertainment, almost all aspects of life has been restored thanks to a ceasefire deal reached between Senegal and the renegade MFDC.
We have now returned to our farmlands. Youths are playing soccer while the entertainment industry is booming, said a middle-aged man clad in sleeveless sports wear.
Indeed, life in Cassamance has taken a twist for the better. From the raucous evening soccer games in Kafountine to the interactive dos in Zinguinchorr to the ballet dance in Binjoona, there is almost always a delightful buzz abounds in the war-mutilated region that shared borders with the tropical tourist resort of The Gambia.
However, it is not only sports and other entertainment sectors that are booming. The fishing industry is also booming. Nature has endowed the province with a sea that is bubbling with marine resources. For example in Kafountine, people from diverse backgrounds-Gambians, Ghanaians, Malians and Guineans- could be all seen on the beach trying to etche out a living either dealing in fresh seafoods or preserved ones.
The war-weary people of Cassamance are grateful to President Wade for bringing peace to their region and are hoping for a lasting peace, security and stability in that part of Cassamance.
