Speaking on the 14th anniversary of the July 22nd Halifa Sallah a senior opposition leader of National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD) said July 22nd is not worth celebrating as it was a day when the citizens of the country were robbed of their fundamental human rights.
Sallah said on July 22nd 1994 as a result of the military take over the constitution was abrogated and elected representatives replaced by a military council that imposed itself on the people.
Commenting on the achievement of July 22nd ,the NADD Flag bearer lamented the failure of the so-called revolution. On Agriculture Sallah explained that despite Jammeh's call for Gambians to go back to the land, his government has not put anything in place to attract Gambians to go back to the Land.
He noted infact 70 percent of Gambians are currently on the farm noting what they lack is support from the government.Mr Sallah Speaking on impartial judiciary said there can be no impartial Judiciary when the security of tenure of Judges constantly lies on knife edge.
Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, the leader of the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) said celebrating July 22nd is sending the wrong signal to anti-democratic elements in society who may think that overthrowing a legally elected government is a right thing.
Mr.Darboe added that while a huge sum of money is being spent on the celebrations, ordinary Gambians continue to to further plunge into poverty.
Another Opposition Leader Henry Gomez of GPDP said despite Jammeh's calls for Gambians to go back to the farm incentives were not provided to attract people to go back to the farm.’ you cannot tell people to go back to the land when farmers don't have enough tractors or fertilizers to farm, you are only saying back to the land because it is nice on your tongue'' explained Gomez.
