Editorial: MP Oley Sey Faces False Checks Investigatios!!!

Banjul:8/29/08-When we reported about former MP Oley Sey’s false check scandal, the state never came out in the open to confirm our story. It claimed that the disgraced former nominated MP embezzled Presidential funds meant for educational purposes. The Banjul based Point Newspaper  on its lead story Thursday captioned “ Oley Sey in trouble again, accused of issuing false checks.”quoted the police prosecutor Cadet Inspector Keita, as having said that there were  numerous complaints brought against the embattled former lawmaker, linking her to the issuance of false checks.

However, Keita did not name names, but insist that the court should deny the accused person bail. Keita argues that if the accused person “ is granted bail, it would jeopardize the ongoing police investigations on Oley Sey’s case.”

We reported here at Freedom that Oley Sey is wanted in the United States in relation to false checks,  she issued to local businesses in Columbus Ohio. She risks being arrested if she steps her foot in the US. There are aggrieved parties affected by Oley Sey’s scamming schemes.

The Jammeh Government took the right move by firing the MP, because allowing such corrupt officials,  in an important office like that of  the National Assembly, it would only lower the prestige of that high office. Public officials should lead by example. They should conduct themselves responsibly. They owe it to the people they served.

Oley Sey happens to be unlucky, but there are many former diaporian Gambians, who falsified their credentials just to earn a Government job in Banjul. We know who these officials are and should be honest enough to tell the truth. Some of them had bad criminal record and could not be hired by any serious employer or establishment in this country.

The Jammeh Government should put its house in order if it wants to earn international respect and credibility. Hiring former felons and paroles would only dent the image of The Gambia. These are not trustable public officials.

A former APRC National Assembly Member name withheld was convicted in the US on Embezzlement charges. She came here on holiday, only to steal from her employer. She secured a job with one of the leading retail stores in the US. How she secured the job is a million dollar question.

The MP did not only violate the condition of her holiday visa, but went as far as abusing the privileges accorded to her as an MP. We all know for a fact that our MPS carry Diplomatic Passports.

Little did the former MP knows that there are Circuit Close Television Cameras (CCTV) positioned in cash registers and other locations in such stores. All store activities are recorded on a daily basis. She can steal from her employers in Banjul and getaway with it and not in the US. She was caught off guard,  when she was summoned for questioning relating to her actions,  while on company clock.

Securing a job with  the Jammeh Government,  is not based on merit or education. As long as you are ready to lie or support the Government, employment is assured for you. This is not the type of Gambia we are yearning for. Employment should be based on qualification, integrity and honesty. You do not hire people,  because you came from the same ethnic group. You do not hire people because they support the APRC. What matters is patriotism. This Government should change its way of hiring people. Give the jobs to the right people. Please conduct a background check on felons serving the Government at this hour. All felons should be shown the exist door. Gambians deserve better. Give us a  break Gambian felons, serving Jammeh's Government. It's about time to quit your jobs!!!!
