President Jammeh Returns To Banjul After Performing Umrah
….Jammeh Says He Has Enough Cattle In Kanilai To Serve Gambia’s Meat Demand
As He Warned Butchers To Comply With Meat Prices
By Staff Writer, Charles Williams, Banjul
Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh arrived home on Sunday, after he returned from his Saudi annual Umrah, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. Mr. Jammeh told reporters on arrival at the Banjul International Airport that he went to Mecca, the holly place, purely to worship God, pray for the country, Africa and the world at large.
Commenting on his recent directive to stabilize the basic commodities and other condiment especially meat,Jammeh said the price he gave is here to stay. He assured Gambians that there is no cause for concern, since he (Jammeh) has enough cattle in his native Village of Kanilai to supply the Gambian market, if butchers fail to comply with the recent meat price. Mr. Jammeh then warned Gambians to desist from abusing his offers or goodwill gesture. He says such ungratefulness would not be tolerated.
Meanwhile, early last week two butchers were convicted by the Brikama Magistrates' court for failing to comply with the meat price. It could be recalled that Gambians have over the years decried over price hike and economic downturn affecting the country. The ordinary Gambian lives less than one Dollar a day. The prices of the basic commodities are as follow:
Bag of rice-D880-890
Bag of Sugar=D670-680
Gallon of Oil=D530-540
Meat and bone now=D60 before=D75
Stake=D80 before=D100
Note: We will run an economic story very soon based on Issues affecting the livelihood of Gambians.
