The coastal town of Bakau was yesterday hit by acute water shortages causing great discomfort to the residents of the area. According to our correspondents the residents of this popular tourist hotspot woke up yesterday morning only to find that their taps were totally dried up thus forcing them to trek long distances to fetch water for their daily domestic needs.
In the wake of this sad state of affairs, despondent residents have sharply criticized the water and energy company for what they call poor customer handling. They called on The Gambian leader to extend his electric broom to NAWEC so as to bring about positive changes at NAWEC. They further accused NAWEC's officials of corruption efficiency and ineptitude.
Speaking to the Freedom Newspaper, Dawda Manneh, a visibly distraught resident complained that many people in Bakau are currently finding it tough to get water to cock talkless of taking bath . He added that the situation is alarming and hence needs urgent intervention. Manneh further disclosed that the residents of the area are poised to take to the street to vent their anger and disquiet if NAWEC fails to fix the problem within the next 72 hours. He said that it is not only households that are hit hard by the acute water shortages but even offices are now feeling the pinch.
Meanwhile, NAWEC this evening went at full tilt to issue a terse statement calming the jittery residents. They said that their technicians are now at work trying to bring normalcy.
