Banjulians and Kombo Residents Lament Poor Sanitation
By Staff Writer Charles Williams, Banjul.
Despite President Yahya Jammeh's much vaunted blitz on environmental sanitation, the city of Banjul and many towns within the Kanifing Municipal Council still remain an eyesore .
Residents of these places are still grappling with poor environmental sanitation thanks to the ineffective services rendered by their respective councils. According to our correspondent , despite the Saturday monthly cleansing exercise commonly known as set-settal the city and many towns could not still boast of clean environment. He said that malaria and other tropical diseases are now on increase because of poor sanitary conditions within these localities.
The much-talked about Saturday monthly cleansing exercise was initiated by President Jammeh some years ago. He came up with idea with the aim of keeping our environment clean . In fact the President went to the extra mile of making it a compulsory for every Gambian to come out to take part in the Saturday Monthly cleaning exercise. He even, on several occasions, threatened to fire heads of government departments and civil servants who show luck-luster attitude towards the exercise.
Our roving reporter visited places where uncollected wastes are being indiscriminately dumped to take some snapshots. He also spoke to residents, passers-by who lamented the bad odor they are inhaling from the environment saying that it is exposing them to serious health consequences.
Muhammad Sillah, complained bitterly about both councils failure to keep their environment clean .He alleged that since the elections of both Mayor Samba Faal and Mayor Yankuba Colley into office, the duo have not been doing enough to meet the expectation of the electorate thus deserve to be given a horse kick.
