Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh, has been bragging about what he called “developmental projects” recorded by his government in a span of eleven years. Speaking at the country’s 41 independence anniversary, Saturday, The Gambian leader says significant achievements were recorded in the areas of Education, Health among other developmental sectors.
In what was described as a brief speech, the President used the occasion to appeal to Gambians to promote national reconciliation at this crucial stage of our country’s body politics. The President says there was need for Gambians to reconcile and live in peace and harmony. This according to Jammeh, will enhance political stability in the tiny West African country.
He also asked Gambians to vote for a party that will guarantee them peace and stability. He says the Ruling APRC was committed to maintaining peace in The Gambia. Jammeh’s statement was being viewed in some quarters as a tactical move to woe voters to vote for his Ruling Alliance For Patriotic, and Reconstruction Party APRC, which observers say was increasingly becoming unpopular in the country.
Jammeh also announces to embark on a road construction across the country. He says efforts were in high gears to construct roads in major towns across The Gambia. Speaking to reporters shortly after the anniversary, Jammeh appealed to Gambians to welcome the King of Morocco, who was due to arrive in Banjul Sunday. Jammeh says “this was the first time for a King to visit the West African country and as such Gambians should turn out in their large numbers to grace the occasion.”
Also in attendance at Saturday’s independence anniversary was founding father of Gambia’s independence Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara. Sir Dawda, was among the VIP guests who graced the occasion. The old man for the first time since the advent of the Jammeh government attended the nation’s national day. Also in attendance was the Guinea Bissau President Nono Viera and the new Mauritanian military head of State.
