Jammeh Condemns Guinean Coup!!!
…“As He Accuses Wade And Other Coup Backers As “ Hypocrites and Enemies Of Development.”
By Staff Writer Fatoumata Jallow, Banjul
Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh has said that African leader(s) who supported the recent military takeover in Guinea Conakry, were doing it for their own selfish interest and not in the greater interest of impoverished Guineans. Addressing reporters shortly after his arrival from the African Summit held in Lagos Nigeria, Jammeh accuses coup backers of being enemies of democracy and development. Mr. Jammeh who came to power through a coup, has publicly condemned the recent mutiny in Guinea Conakry led by an army Captain Camara. Jammeh’s statement followed a declaration made by Senegalese President Abdoulie Wade supporting the coupists. Wade says he was personally contacted by the coup leader Captain Camara to serve as the junta’s international spokesman. But President Jammeh believes that coup deserves to be condemned by all true democrats and freedom loving nations.
President Jammeh informed reporters that the Lagos meeting had agreed in principles not to support agents of coups and their accomplices. Jammeh said Guineans are suffering in the hands of the mutineers and the continued presence of the junta in that country would further cause economic hardship for the populace. He said both the Economic Community of West African states (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) have condemned the recent coup in Guinea.
Jammeh said the coupists should adhere to the time table for the return to civilian rule initiated by ECOWAS, in the interest of restoring democracy in Guinea. He says failure to comply with the said timetable, would have an adverse effects on the lives of poverty stricken Guineans.
The Gambian leader stated that ECOWAS had urged the international community to ensure smooth election in Guinea; that the regional body ECOWAS would be responsible for the resources to be spent in organizing election.
"We are not alienating them, when they were taking power they realized that they would be condemned. It is not only ECOWAS that condemned them, but AU has suspended them and the EU too. There is a principle that says that any unconstitutional change of government is unacceptable. Those leaders supporting them are hypocrites. We had a quorum to suspend Guinea, therefore leaders who support Guinea cannot nullify the condemnation of the suspension" Said president Jammeh, who was apparently referring to President Wade of Senegal.
