Michael Scales's Views On The GMC Party!!!
Dear Mr. Editor,
Perhaps not the "perfect" launch week for The New political party " on the block." The Name ...Gambia Moral Congress is I suppose adequate and catchy if shortened to GMC and may catch on? The opening mission statement was again adequate but not particularly inspiring. It contained joined up writing and touched on the main segments of Gambian protocol. I thought the commentary by Lawyer Darboe was cautionary and in usual Gambian fashion made by suggestion some reservations as to the political correctness of the parties foundation. You know I love the way Gambians sift through everything with a fine tooth comb like a British nit nurse looking for little winged devils from a child’s hair. God Bless the British nit nurse.{laugh!
Freedoms "Man of the Year" Barrister Mai....is certainly someone to be admired for his forthrightness and undoubted passion for the underdog. God knows The Gambia has many such deserving citizens that have benefited from his goodness. However, I was disturbed by his attack against Mr. Justice Paul. I have an obvious affection for Nigerian Judges by family association. What was revealed in Mr. Justice Pauls third hand delivery to this newspaper mirrored my own experience of threat and intimidation if you push the wrong buttons in Banjul. Even in this remote corner of England I still get the "odd" threat for speaking on this honourable newspaper? It's not so bad when they suggest they want to kill me..but it becomes deeply disturbing when they extend the threats to my children and family. So much so that my telephone is constantly monitored and the police are on notice to respond within two minutes. Poor wages indeed for the thousands our hours and pounds that I invest in Gambians. But as the saying goes..."you can't please all the people all of the time".
Their is no doubt in my mind that The Gambia would benefit greatly from a new all inclusive political party of Unity. But the need is so great and the cause so plausible that I too would advise caution at this time. However I wish all those concerned well. My advice is to take the on line media with you on this and reinforce their integrity through respect to their impartiality. Mai Fatty has a good start with Freedom Newspaper, being their current and deserving ......Man of the Year.
May I extend my congratulations to Ms.Neneh Mc'Dowell Gaye as the reported "new" Ambassador to The United States. From the Jammeh Governments perspective, I thought she performed stoically for the APRC as M.D. of The Observer. She is by far The Gambia's best speaker. Her delivery to The National Assembly as Information Minister was impeccable. especially about the 50% sale of Gamtel/Gamcel to the Spectrum Group.
Her promise of no redundancies and her view that it was in the Gambia's best interests as Gamtel was cash strapped.....pail into insignificance now. I thought her appointment to The Observer was way below her capability. But true to her discipline she was steadfast and loyal to duty.
She will be a considerable asset to Jammeh in America. I do admire greatly those Gambians that are intelligent and highly professional.....I wish her well.
I remain...Michael U.K.
