Jammeh Fires University Professor Suspected of sympathizing with the opposition!!!!
By Staff Writer Fatoumatta Jallow, Banjul.
Gambia’s President has fired a senior lecturer of the University of The Gambia, on the grounds that the professor supports the opposition. Dr. Boro Suso is the latest causality of Jammeh’s firing spree. Suso was a Professor of Development Studies lecturer at the University of the Gambia prior to his removal.
The dismissal of Dr.Suso came two days after the president's convocation speech. He made it categorically clear that he will use all his powers to dismiss suspected opposition supporters at the University. Dr.Suso has been accused of being an opposition sympathizer, a charge he denies.
During this year's convocation celebration, president Jammeh said the University of The Gambia does not belong to APRC Party, neither any political party in the country. He said the University is an independent learning institution and therefore should be free from party politic. Jammeh warned that if any lecturer has grievances against(the president)can quit the University and form his or her own political party and contest for the election. Jammeh observes that even if the person wins the election, his reappointment at the University will be determine by him(Jammeh).
It could be recalled that president Jammeh's this year statement contradicts his last year convocation speech where he said that the University of the Gambia belongs to him. According to the University act the president or the chancellor of the University cannot sack any lecturer. It states that it's only the University senate that has that authority to sack lecturers based on their conduct. Observers here said that this is a clear manifestation that president Jammeh as President threatened the academic freedom at the University.Dr.Suso is yet to be reinstated to his position as we go to press.
