By Staff Writer, Bolong Jammeh, Banjul

As part of the periodic briefings,  the United States Ambassador to The Gambia Barry Wells, on Friday 20th February, called on the Gambian leader Yayha Jammeh at  State House in Banjul in a bid  to consolidate democracy, human right and press freedom in the country. After having  consultations  with the Gambian leader, Ambassador Wells told reporters that the US Government is very keen in supporting education and the Peace Corp volunteers operation in the country. He expressed optimism that president Jammeh is satisfied with the current bilateral relationship between Banjul and Washington.

Ambassador Wells was quick to add that the US Government will continue to dialogue with the Jammeh administration in a bid to ensure democracy, press freedom and human right in the Gambia.

Well placed sources close to the President’s office said Ambassador Wells was concerned about the recent criminal charges brought against journalist Pap Saine as well. Sources could not confirm if Mr. Saine’s prosecution was part of his close door meeting with the President. But dependable sources went on to add that the state is likely to discontinue the trial of Pap Saine in view of  the interventions made by certain individuals in the country . Our source said the President Yahya Jammeh has been under increasing pressure from the diplomatic community to consider dropping the criminal charges filed against the Point editor, whose citizenship is also a subject of investigation at this hour.

The US Ambassador was assured by the Gambian leader about Gambia’s willingness to work closely with the new administration in  Washington-most importantly in the area of democracy. Jammeh said his Government was open to dialogue and would continue to work closely with its development partners.
