EDITORIAL:  Why Should Lawyer Mai Fatty Be Trusted???

….Has Mai Fatty Ruined The Future Of His Business Partner In The US??

We Shall Find Out In This Exclusive Editorial

Lawyer Mai Fatty’s credibility has been questioned once again, this time by an aggrieved litigant. While, we do not want to comment on the main substance of the case, it is imperative to note that allegations of misconduct, and financial impropriety leveled against our so called political leaders, should not be buried under the carpet. Cases of such magnitude, should be given the necessary media coverage it deserved.  If it means the disqualification, or expulsion of such political figures from our body politics, then so be it.  The time has come to hold our leaders accountable. We should not confine the media policing on Yahya Jammeh alone. There are many Yahya Jammehs in our in midst, who needs to be exposed beyond redemption. We do not need corrupt leaders to preside the affairs of our state.

Few weeks after the naming of his political party, a concerned Gambian, contacted the Freedom Newspaper, complaining about what he calls “the bad experiences”  he suffered in the hands of Mai Fatty.  His complaints were premised on the following grounds: That,  he and Mai Fatty, jointly operated an airline company in New York, prior to Fatty’s return to The Gambia.  That, Fatty made him to pay debts,  he incurred in the name of the company in the sum of $15,000 dollars. The concerned Gambian said he was at some point considering instituting legal action against our embattled legal luminary.  He went as far as threatening  to draw the attention of the Independent Electoral Commission, the (IEC) and the Ruling APRC about what he perceived as his “ legitimate case” against Mai Fatty.

In a bid to avail him the opportunity to respond to such wild allegations brought against him, our Editor personally emailed Mai Fatty, some couple of months ago,  soliciting reaction from him, but up to date, there have not been any word from Fatty.  He ignored our repeated emails, demanding clarification on the financial impropriety leveled against his person. We have copies of the said emails in our files.

We never implied at any point in time  that he (Fatty) was guilty of any wrongdoing. We merely asked him to clarify,  if such allegations were true, or false. One thing, Mr. Fatty has to bear in mind is that; silence is not a solution to his current predicament. He needs to clear his image for the sake of his integrity, political party, party supporters, and well-wishers.  Failure to do so, he will be  extending an unnecessary rumors, speculations, and counter speculations.

It is a known fact that members of The Gambia Bar Association are expected to heed to certain rules, and regulations-governing the legal body.  Issues bothering on “integrity and gross misconduct” are usually red flagged.  In other words, members who violate such code of conduct, are usually subjected to disciplinary action up to expulsion. That, such members of the bar, could be debarred,  if an adverse evidence of  misconduct is established against them.

While, we do not want to  pass early judgments against our learned friend, the onus lies on Fatty to jealously safeguard his integrity. It is an undisputable fact that Mai Fatty,  is an intelligent, and outspoken young lawyer. He is smart to the core,  and knows the law to the tip of his finger.

That said, it is imperative to note that education without integrity, and sense of honesty, is counterproductive.  Mai needs to do whatever it takes to work on maintaining a good reputation as a lawyer and politician.  In the absence of good reputation, it would be hard for him to realize his set dreams.

Whether true, or false, there are reports circulating that Mai Fatty was living under "financial uncertainty" prior to the  alleged attempt on his life. That, it was hard for him to pay his house and office rent on time.  That, Fatty was on the verge of being evicted by his landlord.

While, we do not want to speculate on the veracity of such reports, we prevail on lawyer Fatty to break the silence,  and tell us his side of the story.  Threats of legal action, or snub will not intimidate us here at Freedom.  We owe it  to The Gambian Community to hold our political leaders accountable, come what may. We are not into this media business for self aggrandizement, or cheap popularity. We have taken a vow to serve our country, until death comes. This is no bluff.  We are siren and committed to doing our job, without fear, or favor. Mai please tell Gambians your side of the story.
