Authorities in The Gambia, have confirmed the death of the detained former MFDC spokesman, Alexandra Gibba, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. Mr. Gibba who was held by The Gambian Government on suspicion of terrorism activities-geared towards undermining the country’s ailing democracy died on Tuesday. Official sources here intimated that the former warlord died as a result of torture he suffered in the hands of Gambia’s security agents. Foreign Ministry sources said Gibba was paralyzed prior to his “untimely” demise. Sources informed the Freedom Newspaper that Gibba had a spinal cord and heart related problems. His torturers were said to have employed all kinds of torture techniques to solicit confession from Gibba.
Mr. Gibba used to be in the good books of President Yahya Jammeh, until his expulsion from the country. He served as security expert and adviser to Jammeh-especially on issues bothering on the Casamance crisis, which poses a major security threat to the region.
In view of his bilingual skills, Jammeh recruited Gibba to spy on the Senegalese Government. He was hosted by The Gambian Government for three consecutive years. He was also allocated a mini office at the Foreign Ministry, where he collects and process intelligence received from his men on the ground-in the southern province of Casamance.
According to authoritative sources here in Banjul, Mr. Gibba’s relationship with Jammeh started to strain following reports that he (Gibba) was teaming up with a renegade rebel leftist under the backing of the Senegalese Government to unseat his administration. Gibba, continued our sources was arrested together with other Becai rebels, who are still being held in The Gambia on suspicion of subversive activities.
A highly placed Foreign Ministry source said President Jammeh is an accomplice in Gibba’s murder. “ He gave orders for the detainees to be tortured. The President was privy to the interrogation techniques and was constantly in touch with the torturers. He even suggested at some point that Gibba and his men be summarily executed. For that I know, Gibba is dead and the President masterminds his killing. More inmates are likely to die because of the torture they suffered,”said our source.
Meanwhile, President Jammeh has given instructions for the remains of Gibba to be buried in Kanilai- a location our sources declined to reveal for fear of reprisals. Our sources said the Senegalese Government was briefed about the demise of Gibba by its intelligence community. Major newspapers in Senegal have also reported about the death of Gibba.
