Following the unceremonious sacking and expulsion of Gambia’s Fisheries Minister Yankuba Touray,  from the Ruling APRC, facts are emerging about the circumstances surrounding his removal.  The disgraced Minister was shown the exit door for  "insubordination and gross incompetence" to discharge his duties as a Minister, sources here said today.  According to highly placed authoritative sources, the erstwhile APRC chief propagandist, has been in the business of delaying Government projects. A classical example, continued our sources was the much talked about “ fishing market”, which is yet to kickoff the ground.  Touray, they went on has been too preoccupied with private errands to the expense of his Ministry. Sources said there are numerous projects currently stalled at the Fisheries Department.

Relationship between Touray and The Gambian leader started to strain when Yanks insubordinates Jammeh publicly.  Sources said the President felt ridiculed recently when Yankuba ignores his instructions.  This was evident during the just concluded Dialogue with the people tour.  Touray was all the time distancing himself from The Gambian leader.  It reaches a point in which Yankuba will walk away from the President, while Ministers sat near him.

"Yankuba was acting fool during those meetings.  Instead of sitting closer to the President, he will walk around to engage the crowd into foolish discussions.  He also does not respect the commander-in-chief, President Professor, Sheikh Jammeh.  Yanks call HE by his name. These, among other things angered the President,” said our source.

Meanwhile, President Jammeh is yet to name Yankuba’s successor.  He is expected to name a new Fisheries Minister by Monday.  Sources close to the sacked Minister said Yankuba Touray is working on resettling in the UK.  Sources said Touray had secured a five year UK visa and had spoken about his intention of leaving the country since his services were not needed by the Government.  Touray had confided to a “ mutual” friend of his about his proposed UK trip.  He also mentioned among other things: pursuing higher education in the UK, in the event he succeeds in fleeing the country.

Sources said Touray is likely to face economic crime charges. According to one official I spoke with  today, due to Touray’s recklessness, the country had lost millions of dalasis from the Fisheries Ministry.  Sources said Touray had not initiated any meaningful development at his Department. Investors left the country in protest due to the institutionalized corruption at Fisheries Ministry.  Investors who refused to put money on the table were denied fishing licensees.

Some Navy and Fisheries officials were also named in a corruption racket. They reportedly collect millions of dalasis from foreign vessels intercepted in Gambian waters for alleged illegal fishing.  The Gambian Navy,  said our sources held such vessel owners at gunpoint, acting like pirates.  They insist on detaining the crew, unless they meet their monetary demands.

In another development, the President Yahya Jammeh has fired Agriculture Perm sec Seedy Jarju.  Tenengba Jaiteh, Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service has been elevated to the position of Deputy Minister at the Petroleum Ministry. She has been replaced by Abdoulie Sallah, the erstwhile Secretary to the Cabinet.  Mr. Njogu Bah, a Perm sec at the office of the President has also been reassigned to another Ministry.  This paper was unable to confirm the exact Ministry, where Njogu, the former Atlanta resident was redeployed.
