A new batch of Gambian judges are to be sworn in soon, a statement issued by the office of the President revealed. The newly hired judges mainly from the lower bench are: Principal Magistrate Edrissa Fafa M’Bai, Basiru Vassili Portier Mahoney, Fatim Singhateh, Amina M.L Saho Ceesay( appointed Master of the high court) Kumba Sillah, and Mama Fatima Singhateh.
The judges were hired by the President, following recommendations from the Judicial Service Commission. More young Gambian lawyers have taken up appointment with the bench.
A date for the swearing ceremony is yet to be scheduled. The appointees will take an oath office, and pledge their loyalty to the law. So far there are ten Gambian judges serving the bench.
The president treats the judiciary as his personal property. Judges who failed to conform to his dictates are summarily dismissed. The country has been reputed for its worsening rights record
In another development, the President was reported to have invited Mosses Richards at his palace. Discussions are afoot for the replacement of the Attorney General. It has been gathered that Richards has been tipped for the AG job, and if all plans goes well Marie Saine would soon be shown the exist door.
