Editorial: Is Jammeh A Liability For The Gambia??

Few days ago, we published a lead story about Jammeh’s plane being grounded in Washington DC. The landing fee for the said plane is being paid for by Gambia’s tax payers. We are talking about several millions of dalasis. We sometimes question if Jammeh has the country’s interest at heart. He is far from being patriotic. Here is a thief, who survived from tax payers money to run his private errands. Yahya Jammeh should bear in mind that his days are numbered. He would one day account for the millions he has embezzled.

He has hijacked almost every sector of development in the country. Jammeh is competing with the business community. He wants to get rich without working. Jammeh is a liability for The Gambia, and her people. He has failed as a leader. He is more of a burden to our impoverished nation.

We are now in Ramadan. Few families in The Gambia can afford a bag of sugar. A bag of sugar cost nothing less than D800 dalasi. Rice, which is the country’s main staple food, meat, and other cooking condiments are out of reach.

There is hopelessness everywhere across the country. Salaries for Civil Servants remained stagnant.  Jammeh lied for a ten percent salary increment for Government workers, but there is no such increment. Civil Servants are living from hand to mouth.

The only people enjoying under Yahya’s Government is his hit men-known as the Kanilai gorillas. They drive fancy cars, socialize with prostitutes, and in some occasions, robbed private business entities. The Kanilai gorillas also owned luxurious houses within the Greater Banjul Area.

There is this report that Jammeh discriminates against our own military. The state guards earned more than other regular soldiers. There is some kind of payment disparity in the military.

Jammeh also favors his tribe, and hit men, when it comes to promotions. He decides who should work at the state house. There are occasions, he would request for the transfer of soldiers suspected of being disloyal.

Without any prejudice, we can state here with confidence that The Gambia under Yahya Jammeh has been reduced to  a failed state. Almost, all sectors of Government had collapsed. The only way out for this mess is a regime change. Gambians should reclaim their country back.
